Creationists' responses to Bill Nye's teaching of evolution.

About a few months ago, I watched the video on YouTube. Actually that was the first time I saw Bill Nye. In the video, basically he told us that evolution is a fundamental part of modern science and we should not teach creationism because we need scientists and engineers in the U.S.

Today, I happen to watch Ken Ham's response to that video. Ken Ham is the CEO of the infamous Answers in Genesis, a web site that promotes literal truth of the bible, like how Noah's Ark could hold two of every species of the earth. Of course Ken Hams' response was hilarious, and anyone with some knowledge on evolution, creationism, and Christianity could dismiss his arguments.

At the end of the video, he said that his organisation had some doctors who studied biology, and they also made video responses, too. He told me to watch those videos, and so did I. In the video, some people with "Ph. D." on biology related field criticized evolution. Are they real?

First, Dr. David Menton who got Ph. D. on biology from Brown university criticized evolution. He mentioned that creationism is taught in , among some other countries, South Korea. What a shame. But as a Korea, I can surely tell you that we only learn evolution in science class. Then he went on and said,

"humming bird ... all of its parts somehow came together by random purposeless change combined with natural selection which is nothing more than differential reproduction."

I could not believe he had Ph. D. in cell biology. Sure, mutations are purposeless, they are just errors while copying DNA. But natural selection is something like the "purpose". By natural selection, good mutations prosper and harmful mutations perish. Why did he have to depreciate it with a strange term "differential reproduction"? Did you really do not understand what natural selection is? If there are millions of randomly shaped stones in a mountain, and you only select beautiful ones then brought them home, surely those stones are not designed by purposes but aren't they beautiful?

Why do the creationist keep saying "purpose"? What do they exactly mean by "purpose"? Animals and plants just exist and basically all they are good at is to exist by reproduction. What's wrong about that? If, like an invisible germ on your hand should have a purpose? As a byproduct of those phenomenon, some animals came to have bigger brains and now they can enjoy being alive by running, playing with brothers, eating/drinking, and some even, thinking of the universe.

Secondly, Dr. Georgia Purdom who got Ph. D. on molecular genetics from Ohio state university said,

"the complete lack of genetic mechanism that allows organisms to gain genetic information   to go from simple to complex over time. "

This is probably a creationists' mantra, because I saw a fabricated "Richard Dawkins busted" video, where a creationist asked him if he could tell her any method that genes could get new information and Dr. Dawkins seemed to be unable to answer it. Later I found that Dr. Dawkins immediately figured out that the interview was a creationism propaganda when he heard that question. Then the creationist edited the video so that he would look dumb. This kind of reminded me of The Simpsons episode, when the interview of Homer was edited so that he would look like sexually attacking the interviewer.

I am not a biologist but a just a commoner, but as far as I know, it is mutation that makes new information. It was so obvious, that I suspected what she meant might be something different. Maybe she meant some detailed, step-by-step mechanisms of genetic mutation? I think biologists probably know the answer, but let's suppose that it is unknown to scientists. We do know that mutations occur, because we see them with our eyes. Even if scientists still do not know the details, it does not mean it can't occur. That is as if saying Einstein did not discover relativity, because we do not know the step-by-step details how he got that idea.

And even if evolution is wrong because it cannot explain it, what answer do the creationism have? Oh, I know, "magic". The almighty supernatural invisible God just put those information into genes, effortlessly with his magical power. How the universe was created? Magic. How stars were formed? Magic... In fact, why do they even do science? Everything was done by God's magical power.

It is just marvelous, how a ridiculous bronze age book and a 2000-year old book could have made some people with apparently high intelligence look so dumb. These people deny all mutually supporting thousands of thousands of result of experiments and studies on tens of fields, and resort to that two old books for all the answers of reality.

Majority of scientists agree on evolution and the universe being 13 billion years old and the earth being 4.5 billion years old. Those scientists are very smart people, and most of them surely heard of the Jesus story. But they decided that real evidences and experiments were more convincing than the two books. Even if some people with degrees on science claim creationism, that cannot be authoritative. And, we should only teach children about science in science classes.

Siri is overrated.

Endless "Would you like me to search the web for...?", that was what my experience was.

When Apple came back with iPhone 4S, the hardware had little advancements. Instead, it boasted Siri as the main "revolutionary" feature. I never had an iPhone, so I only watched some YouTube videos or tested Siri only briefly using other people's iPhone 4S.

Now, yesterday iOS 6 was released and it brought Siri to my iPad 3. Yesterday evening, I tried to use Siri, but it was unresponsive. We all know Siri does all analyses on the server-side. It seemed the server was clogged with tremendous amount of traffics generated people like I. It was impossible to test Siri yesterday. Today, I tried it again. This time the server responded well except for a few times.

Like everyone else, I began with questions like "Weather" or "What time is it?" or "Make an appointment at 6 PM tomorrow." For these questions Siri worked very well thought quite slower than Google Now. This must be relatively easy for Apple to make Siri to respond to questions/commands that Apple engineers expected.

But when you try to ask more advanced questions that Apple engineers did not expect, most of the time you will end up with "Would you like me to search the web...?". See the screenshot above. I heard the "Would you like to search" so many times, I asked why it was so difficult to talk with Siri, in a frustration. And to put salt on my wound, Siri answered to it with "Would you like to search...".

Google Now came after Siri, but Google's Android had voice command and voice dictation far better than those of iPhone 4's. They were very useful for me. Google Now answers to basic questions using Google's vast amount of data, and when it cannot know the short answer, it just quietly shows the web search, thus saving my time.

Siri seems not to understand questions that Apple engineers manually have programed for. Yes, Siri answers to advanced questions "What is the meaning of life?", but those were so common that Apple engineers must have put predefined answers, and Siri just plays randomly one of the answers. Otherwise, why does Siri give the same 2~3 answers always?

This is a little bit different thing, but Siri's voice is too unnatural. Google Now's voice is far more natural and pleasing to hear. Siri's voice is pain in the ears. Though the graphical elements in the answers are quite pretty.

The bottom line, Siri is too much hyped by the wonderful marketing ability of Apple. Siri can only

• Answer/execute very common tasks and questions relating weather, appointments, launching apps, etc (they show the list, if you press the (i) button.)
• Answers to questions in a format, which Apple engineers had predicted, by using the data from Wolfram Alpha.
• Answers to some silly questions/jokes that Apple engineers had input pre-defined answers.
• All others, "Would you like to search the Internet".

Unless you want to spend your free time on listening some silly jokes from Siri, Google Now is far more fast and pleasing to use.

Can't win a debate with a person who believes supernatural powers.

Today, I happen to talk about evolution of animals with one of my colleagues. He is a protestant Christian. I believe he has decent knowledge on other fields such as politics or living, but his religious belief seriously seemed to be disabling his otherwise clear thinking.

He said he did not believe in evolution at all. So, naturally, I told him many evidences of evolution, naïvely thinking that could at least make him re-consider his position on evolution.

A digest of the conversation

I: What about the countless intermediate fossils? There are lots of old, intermediate human species fossils that lead to the modern human.
He: They are all different animals. They exterminated because they could not survive, and all current animals are created in their current forms again by some Being, possibly from outer space. I think this re-creation happens from time to time.

I: Then, why all animals have similar features, as if they are related to each other?
He: Suppose you create animals, why would you start things from scratch? Wouldn't you reuse the same parts?
I: Why do all animals have so much DNA-similarity? For example bananas have 40% the same genes with us, why is that?
He: Again, the Being that created animals reused the modus operandi.

I: Evolution of bacteria can be confirmed within a man's lifetime. They develop different genes shortly, and diverse into different species.
He: That is just adaptation. Bacteria don't become animals like us.
I: If we give millions of years to the bacteria, they could evolve into a fish-like animal. Such big evolution doesn't happen in some tens of years but in millions or billions years.

I: Why do humans have 46 chromosomes and all other great apes have 47 chromosomes and one human chromosome has the shape of two merged chromosomes?
He: It just looks like that, but that's just the Being created humans that way.

I: Why do humans have so many DNA chunks of viruses in our DNA sequence, and why do Chimpanzees and humans have the same virus DNA chunk at the same location?
He: It just looks like that.

I was going to mention other evidences such as the development of embryos or behavioral similarities between human new-born babies and adolescent Chimpanzees, but time was up and I had to get back to work.

Wishful thinkings and resorting to supernatural things -- that's not science.

The problem of his way to thinking is that it is not backed up by evidences. It IS possible that the Being who created all animals just did things so that AS IF animals look evolved to us. But the probability is very very low. And there is no evidence. It is just "I think it is something like that, you cannot disprove it." An undisprovable hypothesis is not meaningful to science and it is only good for a  children's story. If scientists all think like that, and get satisfied such conclusions, there would be no advancements in science at all, or we may go backwards to the Dark Age.

Suppose that I claim a recent unsolved murder was committed by the evil sprit of Hitler back from the Hell. Here I go.
I: I know it is true. The sprit of Hitler killed him.
Sane person: Hitler is dead.
I: Yeah, but souls don't disappear. He was so bad, that he escaped from Hell.
Sane person: There is no such thing as a soul.
I: Oh yeah? Prove that souls don't exist!
Sane person: You prove that souls exist.
I: See, you can't disprove the existence of souls. They are real! And I can just feel it was the spirit of Hitler.
Sane person: But the person was murdered by a gunshot. Why did the sprit use a gun?
I: The spirit made it look like that, but he actually used his magic power to move the gun.
Sane person: What about the footprint of an intruder to the victim's house?
I: They were some other guy's. Probably a passer-by, enchanted by the power of the sprit,  walked into the house mindlessly then went out.
Sane person: How come it is possible?
I: Spirits have such a power to distract humans' minds. We all believe that. Disprove that it is wrong, then!
Sane person: That again?

And it goes round and round like that forever... Yes it COULD be possible, but the probability of such reality is so very very low than the chance of that the murder was committed by a human criminal. In fact, I can claim all crimes that have ever happened were done by mind-controlling evil sprits, but I have no evidence other than that I somehow strongly feel  my claim is right or that it certainly looks to me so. What a catastrophic world it will be, if majority of people think like this!

Things that look obvious to you at first, often are not true if you learn about them

It is very easy to think that all animals are created by some super being. Then, why do you think the absolute majority of biologist never doubt evolution? Because there are so many evidences and predictions match the phenomena so well.

You know that many people dreamed of flying. They all imagined something like giant wings as the apparatus to fly. Well, it must be looked so obvious to prehistoric man to think like "All flying animals have wings. Therefore, we must need wings to fly." If we go back to that time and tell them briefly like "No, you need big revolving metal fans and fire to heat the air!", they will probably scorn at us first. "Stupid men, metal is too heavy to fly with. it must be light like a wing of a bird." But if some of the prehistoric men were wise, they would listen to us. And, as they learn all the chemistry, physics, aerodynamics, mechanics and so on, they should reach to the understanding of what we meant.

Those who deny evolution are just like those prehistoric men above. If only they spend sometime on actually learning evolution, not on listening to each other!

옵티머스 뷰 리뷰 (약 2주일 사용 후)

이전 리뷰에서 단점을 많이 말했고, 지금도 이런 기기를 출고가 99만 원에 살 생각은 전혀 들지 않지만, 장점이 없는 것도 아니고 해서 추가 리뷰를 적으려고 한다.

액정

실외에서 잘 보인다. 햇빛이 밝은 아침에 밖에 들고 나가서 갤럭시 넥서스와 나란히 들고 비교해 보았다. 물론 둘 다 최대 밝기로 설정했고 보호 필름 따위는 붙이지 않았다. 뷰가 훨씬 밝게 잘 보인다.

홈 화면 개수

다른 업체 것은 보통 메뉴를 누르면 "편집"이 있어서 화면 개수를 거기에서 줄일 수 있는데, 뷰의 경우 홈 화면 편집 메뉴에서 그런 게 없어서 안 되는 줄 알았다. 오늘 혹시나 해서 pinch-to-zoom을 해 보았더니 홈 화면 개수 수정이 가능했다.

들고 다니기에 너무 불편하다

LG는 이 제품을 만들고 테스터들을 대상으로 테스트시키고 의견을 들었을까? 아주 의심이 간다. 하루 한 번 손에 들고 다녀 보니 옆으로 넓어서 한 손으로 잡기 매우 불편한데다가 옆 면이 매끈해서 미끄러질 것 같다. 옆 면에 손가락이 걸릴 수 있도록 약간 굴곡을 주거나, 최소한 스트랩을 달 수 있는 고리라도 만들었으면 어떨까? 왜 아무도 그런 제안을 안 했을까?

배터리 성능

배터리는 상당히 오래 가는 편인 것 같다. 마하에 비해 많이 발전했다. 거지같았던 마하...

To hell with minimalism

애플 하나로 족하다. 요즘은 너도너도 미니멀리즘이라고 중요한 기능들을 다 없앤다. 뷰를 써 보니 볼륨 조절이나 전원을 끄는 게 너무 불편하다. 작은 볼륨 버튼이 마치 숨듯이 옆에 있어서 누르기 너무 힘들다. 왜 전면에 아무 것도 넣으면 안 되는 것일까? 저렇게 빈 공간이 많은데. USB 단자처럼 덮개를 만들어 안 쓸 때는 덮고 쓸 때만 나오게 하면 안 될까?

화면 하단의 버튼들은 옵티머스 마하처럼 물리 버튼 (물론 마하보다 더 감이 좋게 만들어야 한다)이어야 했다. 지금 네 개의 소프트웨어 버튼이 있는데, 한 번 누르면 불만 들어 오고 반응이 없을 때가 있으며, 불이 꺼지면 버튼이 잘 보이지를 않고, 이 무거운 전화기를 한 손으로 들기 힘들어 두 손으로 잡으려면 버튼 때문에 잡을 곳이 없다. 버튼과 버튼 사이가 너무 벌어져 있다. 물리 버튼을 붙여서 예쁘게 갖다 놓고 남은 공간에 볼륨 조절이나 스테레오 전면 스피커 등을 갖다 놓았으면 좋았을 것이다.

알림 LED가 없다

갤럭시 넥서스의 LED 때문에 전화나 SMS를 놓친 것을 알게 되어 확인한 적이 몇 번이나 있다.   물론 LED가 싫다고 하는 사람도 있을 것이다. 최소한 넣어 놓고, 필요 없는 사람은 옵션에서 끄게 하면 되지 않나. LED 알림은 전화기의 필수 요소라고 생각한다.

HTC Evo 같은 받침대가 없다

뷰는 매우 크다. 이 걸로 동영상을 볼 일이 많은데, 세워 놓고 보기가 너무 힘들다. 옆 면이 둥글게 되어 있어 벽에 기대면 쓰러진다. Evo처럼 세울 수 있었으면 좋았을 것이다. 아니면 독(dock)을 팔든가.

갤럭시 S3 - 다음 뉴스 댓글은 항상 가관이다.

얼마 전에 갤럭시 S3가 뽐뿌에 번호 이동, 3개월 7만 4천 원 요금제 유지로 판매되었다고 한다. 그런데 이 다음 반삼성 거지들이 아직까지도 난리다. 그들의 주장은

• 갤럭시 S3가 17만 원이다: 이 것은 뽐뿌나 번호 이동 시장에 대해 전혀 모르거나, 일부러 무시하고 있는 것이다. 뽐뿌에서 진정한 17만 원이 되려면 신규에 3면제, 요금제 자유여야 한다. 번호 이동이라는 전제에, 7만 4천 원 요금제 사용, SKT의 경우 위약금2인 5만 원을 더하면 실제 뽐뿌식 "유지비"는 약 40 만 원이 될 것이다. 일반인의 경우 "메인 회선"을 사용할 테니 전화 요금도 다 그 통신사로 갖다 바치게 된다. iPhone은 원래 가격이 잘 안 떨어지는 아주 특이한 경우이고, 나머지 전화기들은 원래 7.4 같은 높은 요금제를 쓰면 할부 원금이 싸지게 되어 있다. 물론, 그래도 할부 원금 17만 원은 엄청나게 보조금을 지급한 싼 가격이다. 하지만 단순히 갤럭시 S3가 100만 원에서 17만 원이 되었다고 떠벌리는 것은 선정적 언론 보도이자, 반삼성 거지들의 무식에 지나지 않는다.
• 갤럭시 S3를 샀더니 온갖 문제에 고장이 끊이지를 않고, 주위 사람이 다 후회한다: 누군지 한 번 보자? 왜 회사에 갤럭시 S3를 산 사람이 많은데 댓글들처럼 AS 센터를 주구장창 전전하고 회사 사람들 모인 데서 갤럭시 S3 고장 났다고 하소연하거나 하는 사람이 하나도 안 보이나? 전에 갤럭시 노트 때도 맨날 고장난다고 하길래, 회사에서 갤럭시 노트 쓰는 사람 중 좀 친한 사람들 3명에게 모두 문제 없느냐고 하니 다들 문제 없이 잘 쓰고 있다고 하더군. 도대체 다음 댓글에 저런 댓글 올리는 사람들은 어느 회사에 근무하는 거냐?
• 갤럭시 S3는 해외에서는 인정도 안 하는 쓰레기이다: Engadget 같은 유명한 사이트에 한 번이라도 들어가 영어 원문 기사를 읽거나 YouTube 유명 리뷰어들의 리뷰나 봐라. 당신들끼리 서로 모여 "갤럭시 S3는 쓰레기다"라고 반복해 봤자 그렇게 되지 않는다. 해외 언론들은 이미 iPhone의 맞수로 갤럭시 S3를 얘기하거나 애플의 최대 경쟁자로 삼성을 언급하고 있다. 물론 애플이 지금 더 잘나간다. 하지만 작년 시장을 보면 애플과 삼성이 거의 다 차지했다. 이런 상황에서 애플의 경쟁자를 꼽으라면 삼성밖에 더 있나? 작년 시장 점유율이 각각 3%도 안 되는 노키아를 경쟁자라 할 것인가, 모토롤라를 경쟁자라고 할 것인가? 3.5인치를 고수하던 애플이 갑자기 화면을 4인치로 늘인 것은 왜일까? 작년 4인치 이상 대형 삼성 휴대 전화기들이 애플 아이폰 다음으로 잘 팔려 나간 뒤 아이폰 화면이 갑자기 커진 게 우연일까?
• 갤럭시 사는 사람들은 학습 능력도 안 되는 저능아들이다: 참 한심한 생각이다. 물론 아이폰이 안드로이드보다 더 좋은 점이 있다. 하지만 안드로이드가 더 좋은 점도 있다. 예를 들어 보자. 통화 녹음이 꼭 필요하면 어떻게 할 건데? DMB가 꼭 필요하다면? 동영상을 주로 보는데 매번 인코딩할 시간이 없다면? 구글 뮤직을 제대로 쓰고 싶다면? 이렇게 되면 안드로이드 전화기를 찾게 되는데, 솔직히 외국 전화기들은 잘 안 들어오고, 국내에서 삼성/LG/펜텍 중에 사후 지원이 지난 2년간 제일 빠르고 좋았던 곳이 삼성이었다. 기타 잡다한 KT 테크나 SK 뭔가 하던 안드로이드 업체는 거의 망해 버렸다. AS처리나 기타 장점으로 삼성을 좋든 싫든 고르게 되는 것이다. 말하자면 선택의 여지가 없어 사는 사람도 있을 것이다.  그런 점을 다 따지지 않고 단순히, 수 백만의 사람들이 다 바보라서 자기는 안 사는 갤럭시를 사고 또 사고 한다고 생각하는 것이다.
• 갤럭시 S3가 단종된다: 갤럭시 S2도 아직 판다. 해외에서도 상당한 호평을 받고 있는 S3를 왜 나온지 몇 달 만에 단종시키나? 증거는?

물론 나는 갤럭시 S 시리즈를 쓴 적이 없다. 국내판 안드로이드는 일본어 폰트에 문제가 있거나 DMB 탑재 등으로 해외 롬을 올릴 수 없고, 검색 버튼이 없기 때문이었다. 그리고 현실적으로 보조금이 많이 지급되는 상황에서 출고가를 다 주고 대리점에서 사는 것도 추천하지 않는다. 적당히 3개월 정도 지나고 가격이 적당히 떨어지면 온라인에서 괜찮은 조건으로 사는 게 좋다. 그리고 삼성의 소프트웨어가 많이 발전했으나 아직도 허술한 점이 많고, 특히 홈페이지 구성도 아직 촌스럽고, 맞춤법도 틀리고, 여러 모로 마음에 안 드는 점이 많다.

삼성 전자를 비난하는 건 좋지만, 사실에 기반해 비난을 하란 말이다. 

창조론자가 만든 듯한 영화 "프로메테우스"

우주가 배경인 SF 영화인데도, 이 영화는 마치 지적 설계론(Intelligent Design)같은 주장을 하는 창조론자가 만든 듯한 느낌이었다.

배경은 2100년인가... 잘 기억은 안 나지만 지금으로부터 좀 떨어진 미래이다. 고대 문명이 남긴 증거를 기반으로 인간을 만든 것으로 추정되는 존재가 사는 행성으로 탐사를 떠난다는 내용인데, 진화론을 완전 무시하고 영화를 만든 듯하다.

외계인의 DNA를 뽑아 조사를 하니 인간의 DNA와 일치한다는 결과가 화면에 뜬다.

만약 그 외계인들이 인간을 만든 것이라면, 우리와 DNA가 99% 같은 침팬지나 80~90%같은 다른 포유류, 하물며 40%가 같은 바나나는 뭔가? 그 외계인들이 지구에 와서 자기들하고 40%만 비슷하계 바나나도 만들고 99% 비슷한 침팬지도 만들고, 100% 비슷한 인간도 만들었나? 물고기에서 인간에 이르기까지 수 억년에 걸친 시간 동안 서서히 진화되는 모습을 보여 주는 수 많은 화석들은? 인간의 DNA 중 수 많은 부분이 과거에 침입했던 바이러스가 주입한 바이러스 DNA인데, 그러면 그 외계인의 행성에도 똑같은 바이러스가 있었나? 진화론에 대해 아무 것도 모르는 사람이나 이 영화의 스토리를 보면서 "아, 그럴 수도 있겠구나" 할 것이다.

주인공 여자 과학자는 크리스천

과학자 중에 크리스천이 얼마나 되나. 그런데 하필이면 주인공 여자 과학자가 크리스천이다. 외계인이 인간을 만들었다고 믿고 있는데, 동료가 "그런데 왜 야웨를 믿느냐"라고 하니까 "그 외계인은 누가 만들었겠느냐"라고 한다.  외계인이 진화에 의해 생겼다는 것을 인정하지 않고 결국 모든 존재가 야웨에 의해 만들어졌다고 생각하는 것이다.  우주의 비밀과 외계 생명체를 밝히는 탐사와 연구를 하고 있는 NASA에 크리스천이 도대체 몇 명이나 있는지를 조사한다면, 외계인을 조사하는 과학자가 크리스천이라는 게 아주 웃긴다는 것을 알게 될 것이다. (물론 바티칸의 "자칭" 천문학자라고 하는 신부들은 제외하자.) 

이 과학자는 목에 십자가를 걸고 있는데, 외계인과 전투 후 다 죽고 자기만 살아 남았는데도 죽어 가는 사이보그 동료를 보고는 가져간 자기 십자가 목걸이를 내어 놓으라고 한다. 그리고는 다시 소중히 목에 건다. 멋지다. SF 영화에서 이런 장면을 보게 될 줄이야. 우주의 광대함과 경이로움을 보고도, 지구가 세상의 중심이라고 생각하고 세상이 6000년 전에 만들었다고 주장하는 기독교를 믿다니.

과학이 발달된 시대에 원시적 질문을 하고 있는 노인 회장

다 늙어 힘도 없는 노인 회장이 나와서 "우리가 어디에서 왔고, 우리는 무엇이고, 우리의 삶의 목적은 무엇인지"를 알고 싶다던가 뭔가 하는 소리를 한다. 과학이 발전해 다른 행성으로 가는 시대에 저 나이까지 살아 놓고, 그 걸 모르나? 생물학과 우주학, 천체 물리학 등이 이미 빅뱅 이후의 대부분의 사실을 설명하고 있는데, 아직도 마치 중세인 듯이 "우리가 어디에서 왔고..." 이런 소리나 하고 있다. 삶의 목적은 그냥 자기 인생에서 재미를 느끼며 즐겁게 보내는 거지, 그 것도 모르고 지금까지 살아 왔나?  결국 저 노인이 하려는 말은 크리스천들이 하는 말과 매우 닮아있다. 크리스천의 답은 "야웨의 종이 되어 야웨를 찬양하고 존경하고 사랑하고, 야웨의 명령에 절대 복종하는 것이 인간 삶의 목적"이라는 것이지.

결론

컴퓨터 그래픽은 물론 객관적으로 대단하지만, 요즘 다른 영화들 그래픽도 다들 저 정도 되는 거라, 특별히 감흥이 없었다. 게다가 말도 안 되는 스토리에 짜증이 났다. SF면 일단 이미 알려진 사실에 기반해서, 아직 밝혀지지 않은 사실에 대해 상상력을 펼쳐야 하는 것이 아닌가? 그런데 이 건 그냥 창조론자의 공상 소설 같다.

옵티머스 뷰 리뷰 2 (3일 사용 후)

배터리

이전에 썼던 옵티머스 마하보다는 나은 것 같다. 옵티머스 마하는 아무 것도 안 하면서 밤에 자고 일어나 보면 배터리가 50%만 남아 있거나 그랬다. Idle인가 그런 기본 서비스가 전력을 많이 소모하고 있었다. 뷰는 그런 증상은 없는 것 같다. 아침에 자고 일어 나서 봐도 배터리 아이콘 상으로는 거의 손실이 없다. (물론 이 아이콘이 deceptive하다. 70%나 100%나 거의 똑같이 보이는 전화기도 있다. 퍼센티지가 나오면 제일 정확한데...) 참고로 이 전화기는 배터리 교체가 안 된다.

다만, 안드로이드 기본 배터리 정보 프로그램을 상당히 수정한 것 같다. 원래 그래프가 위에 나와야 하는데 아래에 나오고, 원래는 그래프를 누르면 그래프가 확대되면서 더 자세한 정보가 나오는데, 그래프를 눌러도 반응이 없다. 도대체 멀쩡한 ICS 배터리 정보 페이지를 왜 이렇게 고친 건가?

화면 반응성

더 낮은 CPU에 더 높은 해상도를 가진 Jelly Bean 갤럭시 넥서스와 비교해 스크롤링이나 화면 전환의 부드러움이 매우 떨어진다. 배터리 사용량 페이지만 해도, 빠르게 스크롤하면 뚝뚝 끊긴다. 플레이 스토어 화면 좌우 전환도 뭔가 끊기며, 기타 전체 화면 전환 효과도 끊긴다.

Skype에서 일본어 입력기로 일본어를 입력할 때 넥서스에서는 잘 되는데, 뷰에서는 뚝뚝 끊겨서 입력하는데 짜증이 난다. (별다른 백그라운드 프로그램 설치한 게 없다.)

Jelly Bean 갤럭시 넥서스를 쓰면서 "아, 그래 이 거야! 이제 iOS도 따라잡았구나." 이런 생각이 들었는데 뷰를 보니 작년으로 되돌아간 것 같다.

기본 론처

페이지 갯수 조절이 안 된다. 나는 3페이지만 쓰는데, 7페이지가 있어 원하는 페이지를 찾으려고 스크롤을 해야 한다. 상단의 구글 검색 바를 없앨 수 없다. 론처에서 프로그램 삭제가 안 된다. (바로가기 지우는 것만 가능하다.) 잡다한 프로그램, 기능 넣는 것보다 론처에 더 신경을 써야하지 않나?

앱 호환성

내가 쓰는 프로그램 중에 실행이 안 되거나 하는 건 없었다.  티스토어 등이 가로 세로 비율이 달라 좀 좌우로 이미지로된 텍스트가 늘어져 보이는 경우가 있었다. 웹 페이지의 경우에는 모바일 사이트가 아니고 데스크톱 사이트가 나왔다.

결론

여전히... LG는 아직도 좀 멀었구나 하는 생각이 든다. 삼성을 싫어하는 사람들 중, LG 제품이 삼성 제품보다 더 좋은데, 삼성이 언론 플레이를 해서 갤럭시가 잘 팔리고 옵티머스는 잘 안 팔린다고 주장하는 경우가 있다. 양심이 있으면 정치적 동기를 가지지 말고 객관적으로 갤럭시 넥서스와 옵티머스 뷰를 놓고 비교해 봐라. LG는 윗 경영진들 중 지금까지 실패한 정책을 낸 사람들을 자르고 똑똑한 사람들을 데리고 다시 시작해야 할 것 같다.

옵티머스 뷰 (Optimus Vu) 리뷰 (1일 사용 후)

옵티머스 뷰가 번호 이동용으로 싸게 나왔길래, 스팸 방지용 보조 회선을 이용해서 구매했고, 어제 제품이 도착했다. 물론 사기 전에 리뷰를 검색해 봤는데, 지금 생각해 보니 전부 자기가 산 게 아니라 협찬 받은 제품이라 장점을 위주로 쓰고, 단점도 그냥 아주 소소한 것들만 써 놓은 것 같다. 그런 리뷰를 믿지 마라. 정말 자기 돈으로, 자기가 쓰려고 산 사람들 리뷰를 믿어라.

외관

전반적인 기계 완성도는 좋아 보인다. 하지만 가로/세로 비율이 4:3이면서 화면이 크다 보니, 손에 잘 잡히지 않는다. 두 손으로 잡자니 화면 아래에 있는 터치 버튼이 걸린다. 갤럭시 넥서스의 경우에는 상하로 베젤이 있어 가로 모드에서 쉽게 잡을 수 있다.

성능

내가 산 제품은 이미 Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4로 업그레이드되어 있는 상태였다. 최신 생산품인가 보다. CPU 종류는 다르지만 OMAP DUAL 1.2GHz인 갤럭시 넥서스보다 Snapdragon DUAL 1.5GHz인 뷰가 성능이 더 좋아야하지 않을까? 물론 벤치마킹은 안 해 봐서 모르겠지만 전반적인 UI의 성능을 보면, 갤럭시 넥서스의 압승이다. 거의 아무 것도 설치하지 않은 상태에서도 뷰의 홈화면 전환이나, 애플리케이션 드로어 애니메이션이 버벅댄다. ICS 에 CPU도 듀얼 1.5GHz가 되는데 왜 이럴까?

그 외, YouTube나 Skype 앱에서도, 화면 전환시 갤럭시 넥서스에서는 보이지 않는 이상한 화면 증상이 좀 나타난다. 전반적으로 운영 환경이 넥서스에 비해 떨어지는 느낌이다.

동영상 재생

기본 탑재된 LG SmartShare와 기본 동영상 재생 프로그램을 사용해 DLNA로 공유 중인 여러 동영상을 재생해 보았는데, 1080p MKV 파일도 거의 끊김 없이 재생이 되었으며, FLV 등 테스트해 본 모든 파일이 문제 없이 재생되었다. 동영상 재생 성능은 좋아 보이나 문제는 4:3 화면 비율이다. 애초에 4:3 비율로 만들자고 제안한 사람이 회사에서 안 잘렸나 모르겠다. 4:3 비율이다 보니, 요즘 대부분의 동영상이 와이드 비율이라 화면 상당 부분이 검은 바로 채워져서 실제 동영상이 작게 보인다.

스피커 성능

그렇게 좋다고도, 나쁘다고도 못하겠으며 중상급은 되는 것 같다. 스피커는 뒷 면에 있어 아무래도 동영상 재생시 좋지는 않다. 전면이나 옆면에 배치하는 게 더 나을 것 같다. 뭐 어찌되었든, 방에서 스피커로 동영상을 보기에 나쁘지 않다. 

다국어화

ICS라 글꼴 크기는 변경 가능하며, 한글 글꼴도 4가지 중에서 고를 수 있다. 그런데 한국어라는 시스템만 고려한 것 같다. 대부분의 국산 전화기와 마찬가지로 시스템 언어는 한국어/영어 두 가지이며, 언어를 영어로 변경하고 글꼴도 Roboto로 바꾸었지만, Skype 등에서 일본어가 한글 글꼴로 표현되어 보기 싫게 보인다.  기본 SMS 프로그램으로 일본어 약자를 보내 보았더니 약자가 깨어진다. 

화면

IPS에 밝다고 해서 기대를 많이 했으나, LG UI 색의 촌스러움 때문인지 해상도 문제인지 그렇게 좋은지 모르겠다. 갤럭시 넥서스의 화면보다 못하면 못했지 별로 좋은 점이 없는 듯하다.

DMB

DMB 수신율은 좋은 것 같다. 안테나 내장인지 몰랐는데, 상단에 조그마한 것을 당기면 안테나가 나온다. 방에서도 안테나를 뽑으니 아무 문제 없이 DMB 수신이 가능했다.

기본 탑재 소프트웨어

SK의 소프트웨어로 떡칠이 되어 있으며, LG의 소프트웨어도 같이 섞여 있다. 처음 실행하면 자기네들이 필요한 다른 프로그램들을 더 설치한다. 예를 들면 T스토어나 LG의 마켓인 SmartWorld가 같이 탑재되어 있고, 이들을 실행하면 사용자 동의를 거쳐 잡다한 다른 것들을 더 설치한다. 그 것들을 설치하지 않으면 이들 프로그램을 이용할 수 없다.

들어 있는 것들을 다 테스트해 봤는데, 내 관점에서는 별로 유용한 것이 없었다. 물론 NFC Go 같은 것은 괜찮아 보였다.  ICS부터는 설정의 앱 관리에서 앱을 disable시킬 수 있다. 즉, 지우지는 못해도 로딩이 안 되게 막을 수 있다는 것이다. 물론 지우려면 루팅을 해야 하는데, LG의 경우 글로벌 모델이 아니면 루팅하다 망가졌을 때 롬을 덮어 씌울 방법이 없어 서비스 센터에 가야 한다. 따라서 LG 것은 루팅을 하지 않는 것을 권장한다. 

NFC

NFC가 가능하며, NFC 스티커가 두 장 기본으로 들어 있다. 이 스티커에 원하는 데이터를 써 넣을 수 있으며 (내장 소프트웨어로), 경우에 따라 유용하게 활용할 수 있다. 예를 든다면, 당신 명함 뒤에 이 NFC 스티커를 붙이고, NFC 안에 당신 홈페이지 주소를 적어 넣는다고 치자. 그러면 상대방 휴대 전화 뒤에 명함을 대는 것만으로 상대방 전화기에 당신의 홈페이지를 띄울 수 있다. NFC 기능을 탑재하고 있는 것은 상당히 마음에 들며, 앞으로 활용도가 늘어날 것으로 보인다.

필기

아이패드의 Bamboo Paper를 사용하는 것과 비슷하다고 보면 된다. 인식 속도가 좀 느려 줄을 빠르게 긋는다면 ~1초 정도의 딜레이는 있다. 화면이 작고, 들어 있는 기본 노트 프로그램의 인터페이스가 별로 좋지 않아 별로 유용성은 없을 것 같다만, 택배 기사가 서명을 받는 용도 등으로는 좋아 보인다. 

SmartVoice (LG 버전 음성 인식)

시스템 언어를 영어로 해도 영어로 나오지 않고, 경고 문구가 뜬다. 별로 쓸모가 없는 듯하다. 그냥 테스트로 "고양이"라고 했더니 "햄스터였군요."라고 하더라. 완성도를 높여 넣든가, 이렇게 어정쩡한 거면 빼고 차리리 퀵 노트 버튼 롱 프레스를 다른 유용한 용도에 배정하는 게 나아 보인다. 남들이 한다고 따라해 봤자 그 사람만큼 잘 할 거 아니면 아무 것도 얻을 게 없다.

업데이트

처음부터 ICS였지만 업데이트를 체크하니 작은 업데이트가 있었다. 예전에는  PC에 연결해 그 거지같은 LG 업데이트 프로그램으로 업데이트를 해야 했는데, 지금은 그냥 기기 내에서 바로 업데이트가 가능했다. 처음부터 그렇게 했어야 했다.

소프트웨어 문제

가로로 오리엔테이션 고정이 안 된다. 가로 상태에서 메뉴 밑의 화면 회전 버튼을 토글해 자동 방향 전환을 disable할 경우 화면이 세로 모드로 돌아가 버린다. Jelly Bean인 내 갤럭시 넥서스에서 해 봤더니 가로로 고정이 된다.

이처럼 뷰에서는 가로 방향 고정이 안 되므로 상당히 곤란하고 귀찮게 된다. 

결론

내가 산 가격 정도에 이런 하드웨어이면 괜찮은 조건이라고 생각한다. 하지만 특수한 상황이 아닌 일반적 사람이 옵티머스 뷰를 휴대 전화기로 사용하려 한다면 다시 생각해 보라고 하고 싶다. 일단은 휴대가 상당히 불편하며, 손에 쥐기도 힘들다. 태블릿으로 활용하기에는 크기와 해상도가 애매하다.
