Why are computer programs in TV shows not like those in real world?

As a programmer... I know most enterprise/business programmers do not have much time to invest in UI. A fews days ago, I and a few others had a lunch meeting with the head of our department. He said, "one of the easiest trap that the utility developer can get in is to make their programs fancy. The most important thing is to deliver the product market as fast as we can."

Yet, when I watch TV shows like "Criminal Minds" I see all kinds of animating, fluid, colorful applications on monitors. They even generates fancy sound effects. I never see any business application that has sound effects! These TV shows are not sci-fi movies, but supposed to be depicting real life. How come the programs in those shows are so not real?

This gives general people a false impresstion.

No, it is YOU who wants to send me to Hell.

Today, I was reading the comments of a Korean news page (Daum News). The news was about a middle-aged woman who attacked a high school girl in  a supermarket. One of the most thumb-up comments was "I bet she was a Christian". Thumbs up: 542, thumbs down: 174.

There were comments for that comment. Some of them were...

• "May those who speak ill of Christianity go the Hell." 
• "You poor souls. ... I do hope you would believe in Jesus later. It is your choice whether you believe or not, but once you died, you cannot choose."
• "I don't have enough courage to love you, but I tried. ..... You only have the chance while you are alive, and afterwards there is only judgement."

Probably those are Christians. You may say those kind of people are really small percentage of the whole Christians or those persons are just a wrong Christian but most Christians are not like him.

Well, the truth is, most Christians I have met online or offline usually threaten me that if I do not believe in Jesus I will go to Hell. When they cannot defeat me in arguments they usually patronize me saying "I will pray for your soul (so that you will not end up in Hell)."

Once I met a random Christian and I told him bad things about Christianity. I do not remember exactly what we said, but it was something like this.
Christian: I do not hate you even though you are attacking me.
I : I did not attack you, I attacked Christianity.
... (omitted) ...
I : I will believe God as soon as I see him. Once I die, and I see him, I will believe him, and I will apologize him. Will he still send me to Hell?
Christian: I don't know. Are you good enough to the eyes of Him?
I : Why does the perfect-loving God send me to Hell, when I am apologizing?

Here is a picture of a billboard to propagate Christianity. It just says everything in one picture. The green text means "God loves you" and the yellow texts on the fire mean "Disbelief, Hell", "Hot, hot". So, God loves you but if you do not believe God, he will send (or at least created a system to send ) you to Hell.

Christians say Christianity is love, but yet when they are angry (because they cannot win in a logical argument) they almost always talk about Hell, because they want the non-believers to go to Hell. If Christianity is really about love and forgiveness, they would not dare to even bring Hell into the conversation. It is a really cruel, disgracing, inhuman place. No person deserves eternal pain. But, clearly Christians do not think so. They want those whom they hate to suffer in Hell. They talk about God, but it is actually they who condemn people to Hell. It is they who is trying to send people to Hell. Because God is you.

Christians don't believe in what they say they believe in.

If you are a Christian, do you really really believe in Heaven?

You know whether you believe in Jesus or not, so you know whether you are going to Heaven or not, right? Because Jesus is so merciful, that if someone believes in Jesus, he goes to Heaven, according to your religion. So, if you know that you are going to Heaven, how can you wait?

Personally I am bad at waiting. For example, if I would going to receive the product I wanted so bad in a week, I just can't stop thinking about it. If there is a way to get the product faster, I would do it. If I were a Christian, and if I knew that I am going to Heaven when I die, probably I can't wait to die. So, suicide is a sin (which book in the Bible says so?). Yeah, I am not going to suicide because then I cannot go to Heaven. But I would participate in every chance I could legitimately die. For example, I would join the army or firefighters. I would try to rescue every people I see on the street or on a subway railroad. Even though I would not suicide, I wouldn't care about taking medicines or exercising. I would eat lots of junk foods (no Bible passage says thou shalt not eat hamburgers, does it?).

Atheists don't do those. Because they know that their lives is once and the most important thing to them. Of course some of them would sacrifice their lives but only for very big big reasons. They cherish their lives. So which one is good for humanity?

According to what you say, if you go to Heaven, you will have eternal life, and you will meet all the people you loved but died, and most importantly, you can meet Jesus. Most Christians lives here on Earth is far worse than those. They have to work, they have to deal with bad people, they suffer pain... Yet, almost all Christians really really try hard to survive. That is, they don't want to die.

You say you believe in Heaven and eternal life, but in reality, you don't.

No OS is perfect, and OS X's Finder sucks.

I have used Windows ever since Windows 95 (to be exact, I used Windows 3.1 a little when I was using DOS.), but I never thought Windows Explorer was great. For example, there even hasn't been a shortcut for creating a new directory. When it came to Windows Vista, I couldn't even customize the toolbar, I couldn't easily edit/remove file associations. The essential "Delete" button was gone and an utterly unnecessary "Burn files" button was irremovable. The folder view mode did not work as I expected. I had been looking for alternatives.

Now that I am switched to Lion as my main OS (I am still using Windows though), I am discovering that Finder is actually worse than Windows Explorer. 

OK, here are what I don't like about Finder.

• No recent directory list, no address auto completion.
• Keyboard navigation sucks. For example, Command + O to open a folder? Suppose you are browsing many folders with a keyboard, on Windows it will be enter, enter, and enter. On OS X, it will be Command + O, Command + O and Command + O...
• No right mouse dragging for copy/move/creating shortcuts. Is it patented by Microsoft?
• No way to copy and paste folder path. A quick Google search gave me this. http://macdevelopertips.com/applescript/copy-finder-path-to-clipboard-tip-1.html So I need to write some sort of script to copy folder path? Yes, it is a way, but how is it good for general users?
• Folder settings are not remembered. I don't like to click "Show All" every time. On Windows, even if files are grouped they are shown by default. On OS X, only one line is visible and you have to click "Show All" each time, even if you open the same folder next time.
• Gestures are not consistent. I want two-finger swipe right for going back, just as in Safari. But in order to go back, actually I need to Option + three-finger swipe "left".
• And much more!

I am not a fanboy, I do not like Microsoft or Apple. I just use the OS that is the best among them. Now that we will soon have Windows 8 and Mountain Lion, I will see which one gets better for the most essential program for the OS. I am willing to switch to any OS.

OS makers should focus on improving the OS's file browser, which is not easily replaceable. It seems these days they seem to spend more time on developing features that can be relatively easily obtained by using free third-party softwares. Since I heard that Windows 8 greatly improved Windows Explorer (finally "pause" when copying!) , I am looking for the Windows 8 Beta release on the end of this month.

진화론을 반박하(려고 애쓰)는 크리스천의 주장들에 대한 대답.

나는 생물학자가 아니다. 내가 알고 있는 지식은 리처드 도킨슨의 책과 다큐멘터리 등에서 얻은 아마추어 레벨의 수준이다. 그런 나도 이 정도는 대답할 수 있다. 그러면 생물학자들은 얼마나 더 잘 답할 수 있겠는가.

나는 기독교 중학교를 나왔다. 다음의 질문 중 일부는 실제로 목사가 성경 수업 시간에 애들에게 했던 것이다. 아직 중학생이라 잘 모르는 애들에게 저런 사이비 질문들로 종교를 주입하려고 한 것에 화가 난다.

1. 인간이 진화의 산물이면, 다른 동물은 왜 진화 안 했는데? 원숭이는 왜 아직 원숭이 상태로 있는 건데?

• 인간이 진화의 최종 단계가 아니야. 생명체에게 있어 진화란 가장 잘 살아 남아 번식하는 것일 뿐. 즉, 번식을 가장 잘 할 수 있도록 진화하는 거지. 그 관점에서 박테리아가 우리 인간보다 열등한 존재가 아니야. 인간의 가치인 "지능", "이성" 이런 것들로 보면 우리가 우위지.
• 다른 동물은 이미 그들이 가장 잘 살아 남을 수 있는 형태로 진화한 것이야.
• 원숭이와 인간의 공통 조상은 환경이 단절되며 서로 다른 환경에 맞도록 진화한 것이야. 지금 원숭이들이 산 곳에서는 그 원숭이 모양으로 살기에 불편함이 없었기에 그 모양이 거의 안 바뀐 것이고, 우리 인류가 나아간 곳은 그런 모양으로 살아 남을 수 없었기에 현재 모양으로 바뀐 것이지.

2. 중간 단계 생물 화석을 내 놔. 사람과 원숭이 중간 생물이 어디 있어?

• 기독교 논리와 다르게 이 세상은 흑백 논리가 아니야. 중간이 무수하게 많아. 디지털이 이니고 아날로그란 거지. 어제하고 오늘하고 확 다르게 보이는 사람은 없어. 2000년 1월 1일의 나나 2000년 1월 2일의 나와 구분이 안 되고, 1월 2일과 1월 3일의 나도 구분이 안 되고, 그런식으로 쭉 오늘까지 매일 그 전날과 비교해도 구분이 안 되지. 하지만 2000년 1월 1일의 나와 오늘의 나를 비교하면? 다르지. 바로 그 차이야, 생물의 종이라는 건.
• 한 종이라고 해서 완전히 같은 개체들로 이루어진 게 아니야, 다들 달라. 하지만 한 종이면 거의 비슷비슷하지. 서로 다른데, 그 차이가 적당히 적어서 적당히 교배가 되면 한 종으로 그냥 우리 편의상 보는 거지. 원형 종이라고,  A와 B는 교배가 되고, B와 C도 교배가 되고 C와 D도 교배가 되는데, A와 D는 교배가 안 되는 종이 있어. 어디까지가 하나의 종일까? 어느 날 새로운 종이 갑자기 확 나타나는 게 아니야. 항상 엄마는 자기와 똑같은 종의 새끼만 낳아. 그런데 아주 약간 차이가 있지. 그게 몇 백 만 년 누적되어 봐, 몇 백 만 년 전 조상하고 지금 개체하고 너무나 차이가 누적되어 그냥 다른 종이 되어 버리는 거야. 2000년 1월 1일의 나와 지금의 나처럼.
• 사람과 원숭이 중간 화석은 이미 많이 나왔어. 유인원 화석들 박물관에 가서 봐. 제발 똑같은 소리 그만하고.

3. 시계 재료를 깡통에 넣고 100억 년 흔들어 봐라, 그게 저절로 시계로 조립되나.

• 서로 특성이 다른 걸 가지고 비유하고 있잖아.
• 시계 조립은 기계적인 작용이지 화학 반응과 관계가 없어. 생물체의 진화는 화학 반응에 의해 처음 생성된 아주 원시적인 분자 화합물로부터, 같은 화합물을 생성하는 아주 단순한 작용이 진행되고, 그 과정에 여러 가지 이유로 생성 과정에 오차가 생기는 것에 기인하는 거지. 지금까지 내용은 확률적으로 어렵지 않지?
• 생물체의 진화는 그냥 뭐라 그럴까, 토탈러지라 그러나, 항상 참인 논리야. 가장 잘 복제하는 놈이 가장 잘 살아 남는다. 여러 가지 오차로 같은 화합물을 생성하는 것들의 여러 변종이 생겼어. 대부분 제대로 안 되겠지. 잘 되던 방식에서 뭔가 바뀐 거니 잘 안 될 확률이 높아. 그런 것들은 항상 참인 논리로, 복제를 못하므로 시간이 지나면 저절로 없어져.
• 그런데 저 과정이 동시 다발적으로 엄청나게 긴 시간 동안 반복돼. 그러다 보면 그 변종 중에는  오리지널보다 약간 더 복제를 효율적으로 하는 놈이 나온다고 해도 이상할 게 없지?
• 그럼 역시 항상 참인 논리로, 그 화합물은 똑같은 놈을 더 많이 만드는 데 성공하지. 이런 게 또 엄청나게 긴 시간 동안 반복돼.
• 이러면 계속 복제를 잘 하는 쪽으로 진화할 수밖에 없지.
• 인간의 고정관념에서 벗어나. 우리에게 보이는 건, 그렇게 우리에게 보이는 것이지 고정된 현실이 아니야. 예를 들어, 새끼 고양이는 우리에게 예뻐 보이지만, 벼룩에게는 어떻게 보일까? 그냥 털 조각밖에 안 보이겠지. 우리가 보는 빨간 색. 외계인에게는 어떻게 보일른지 우리는 상상조차 할 수가 없지.
• 생명체가 우리에게는 아주 특이하고 유전자와는 관계 없는 의식을 가진 특별한 존재로 보일 수 있겠지만, 완전히 다른 관점에서 본다면 그냥 유전자와 그 보호막 덩어리로 보일 수도 있겠지.
• 동물처럼 복잡하고 대단한 것이 화합물에서부터 나올 수 없을 것처럼 보이는 고정 관념을 버려.

4. 어떻게 이 모든 것이 이렇게 완벽할 수 있지? 신이 환경을 꾸미고 인간을 만든 게 아닌가?

• 원인과 결과를 혼동하지 마. 지구 환경이 우리를 위해 바뀐 게 아니고, 우리고 환경에 맞게 바뀐 거야.
• 지구 환경은 완벽하지 않아. 내가 만약 신이었다면, 바이러스나 기생충이 인간은 못 건드리게 하고, 인간은 100살이 되면 편안하게 죽게 디자인했을 거야.  (제발! 인간이 사과를 먹어서 신이 벌을 준 거라고 하지 말자. 내가 완벽한 사랑의 신이었으면 그 자리에서 용서했을 거니까. 신이 나보다 못해?)
• 우리가 알고 있는 우주에만 해도 행성은 몇 천 조 개 이상 있을 거야. 그렇게 많다 보면 그 중 몇 개는 온도가 적당할 수도 있는 거지. 물도 적당할 수 있는 거고. 그리고 꼭 물과 온도가 지구와 같지 않더라도, 그 환경에 맞는 우리와 전혀 다른 타입의 생명체도 있을 수 있어.
• 다시 말하지만, 그렇게 보이는 것을 그렇게 믿는 고정 관념을 버려.

역겨운 크리천들의 "지옥" 타령

기독교를 안 믿을 이유는 널렸다, 하지만 그들의 태도 중 나를 가장 열받게 하는 것 중 하나는 "지옥" 타령이다.

오늘 다음 뉴스 댓글 많은 뉴스 목록에 영국 대주교와 리처드 도킨슨의 토론 내용이 올라 왔다. 댓글은 물론 대부분 진화론의 우세였으나, 게중에는 크리천들의 댓글도 있었다. 그런 댓글의 대부분이 "이런 불쌍한 것들, 하나님을 욕해서 지옥 가서 고통 받으며 후회해도 늦다." 이런 논리였다. 아, 정말 짜증난다.

해리포터 영화가 있다 (나는 보다가 말았지만). 그 세계에는 마법이 있다. 현실에는 물론 마법이 없으므로, 그 영화 내용이 말이 안 된다고 할 수도 있을 것이다. 하지만 그 영화 속의 세계를 놓고 보면 나름대로 일관성과 논리가 있고 개연성이 있다. 즉, 모순적이지는 않다는 것이다. 하지만 기독교는 자체에 모순점이 있다.

하나만 골르란 말이야.
어떻게 (1)자기를 안 믿는다는 이유로 영원이 사람을 지옥에 넣고 괴롭하는 존재와 (2)인간을 세상에서 가장 사랑하는 완벽한 사랑인 존재가 같은 존재일 수가 있는가? 그 어떤 판타지 세계에서도 이건 성립이 안 된다. 이 모순을 지적하면, 늘 그렇듯이 크리스천들은 말을 빙빙 돌리거나, 다른 주제로 빠지거나, 이상한 주장을 한다. 얼마 전에 어떤 미국 크리스천과 얘기를 해 봤다. (1)에 관해서. 그 사람은, 하나님은 너무나 선한 존재인데, 인간에게 자유 의지를 줬고, 인간이 스스로 지옥에 가는 짓을 한다는 것이다. 아, 정말! 누가 지옥에 가고 싶어하는가? 인간이 한 행위가 지옥에 간 원인이라고 주장할 수는 있다. 하지만 결국 인간을 지옥에 보내거나, 최소한 그런 일을 하면 지옥에 간다는 체계를 성립한 건 당신들의 하나님 아닌가? "나는 지옥에 꼭 가고 싶다 (비꼬는 말투로 하는 거 말고)"고 하는 사람이 어디 있는가?

저 신을 보니 누구 말마따나, 의처증 걸린 남편이 떠오른다. 의처증 걸린 남자는 자기는 아내를 너무나 사랑한다고 말한다. 너무나 사랑해서 다른 남자와 아내가 같이 있는 걸 볼 수 없다고 하고, 아내를 사랑하기 때문에 때린다고 하지. 실제로 그런 남자 꽤 있다. 그런데 제 삼자가 보면 사랑이 아니다. 자신을 믿으면 천국으로 보내 주고, 자신을 믿지 않으면 있는 죄 없는 죄 덮어 씌워서 지옥으로 보내는 신의 사랑은 의처증 걸린 남자의 사랑과 같다.

음... 이렇게 말을 하면 이 크리스천들은 또 무슨 논리를 들고 나올까? 하나님이 인간을 너무 사랑해서 지옥에 간다는 인간의 의견을 존중해 준다? 좋다. 나는 지옥에 가기도 싫고 있지도 않은 하나님을 믿지도 않는다, 그러면 어쩔 텐데? 다시 말하지만, 지옥에 가서 영원히 고통 받기를 원하는 존재는 이 세상에 단 하나도 없다, 기독교의 주장이 맞다면  믿지 않으면 지옥에 간다는 논리를 만든 건 신이 된다. 세상 자체를 창조하고, 모든 질서를 정한 신이 그걸 만든 게 아니고, 악마가 만든 거라고 주장하지 마라. 설사 악마가 만들 것이라도, 내가 완벽히 선한 신이었다면 그 악마가 만든 논리를 없앨 것이다. 없앨 능력이 있으면서 방치하는 것도 악이다.

무서운 신, 사랑의 신, 하나만 골라라. 파이를 먹고도 소유하는 법은 없다.

The links of 4 billion years.

Creationism is just a disgrace and an insult to the humans and living things.

My father survived and succeeded to make an offspring, and so did his father and his father. This goes up to the first living cell that appeared about 4 billion years ago. Think about their efforts! For 4 billion years, the link never had been broken, otherwise I would not have been here. I will not count the number of individuals from I to the first cell, but there could have been millions. None of them died before reproduction. A million time luck! If I go up to my ancestry there should have been mouse-like animals, lizard-like animals and fish-like animals. They all worked hard to survive. I can't even imagine all the life stories of the millions of lives in my lineage back to the first cell. All I can think of them is that they have survived all the harsh environments and somehow managed to reproduce, thus I am now.

With creationism, everything becomes so very less impressive. There was an all-powerful being that had been just there without any effort (God just was there), and the all-powerful being just created all living things in a few moments in their present forms without much effort. Yes, it's all-powerful God, do you think it would be anything difficult for God to create animals or humans? So humans just popped into existence by God and survived for only a few thousand years.... This greatly diminishes all the efforts life on Earth has made for 4 billion years.

Creationists often says something to praise their God for all the beauties and glories they see in living things. Glory? What Glory? What's so great about living things if an all-powerful being just made them effortlessly in a few moments? That should have been less impressive than a toaster machine pops out toasts. When I think of the efforts of 4 billion years of life, now I can truly be grateful to them and look solemnly at the world with wonders.

블로그를 다시 시작하며.

블로그... 이게 왜 필요한지 전에는 몰랐다. 2005년에 열어 놓고 별로 쓸모 없는 것 같아서 하다가 말았다. 그러다가 나의 이런 저런 생각과, 지식들을 그냥 이런 저런 사이트에 막 올리게 되고, 생각해 보니 아깝다는 생각이 들었다. 한 곳에 모아 놓으면 좋지 않겠는가? 아무도 안 보더라도, 무언가 내 생각을 말해 놓을 수 있는 곳이 있다는 것이 좋은 것이 아닌가? 블로그 다시 시작한다.

ブログ・・・。　昔はこんなものがどこに役に立つのか気づかなかった。2005年に開けたのに、今まで放置しておいた。そのうち、私のいろんな考え、知識などを適当にいろんなサイトに散らかしておいた。考えてみれば惜しい!  一つのところに集めておけば、よかったのに。誰も見なくても、私の考えを話せるところがあるのはいいことではないか。ブログ、また始める。

Actually, I am atoms.

I have been amazed by the structures of atoms. Maybe you have been, too. I thought they were very weird things. Very tiny electrons are going round far far away from a nucleus. And come to think of it, I am that very thing.

As an atheist, I think myself consists of physical materials, i.e. atoms. Not only my body, but my consciousness is, too. Christians have vague idea that we have something called souls, which are not effected by the physical world. Yeah, in your dreams. I think my consciousness is like a software. I am not saying it is a software because it just follows written instructions, but because the way it exists in this physical world is the same as that of a software. Think of Windows. Without computers, Windows cannot exist. Windows is not a physical thing, but it exists as a physical thing, you got it?

Let's say there only left one computer on the world, and all other DVDs, written documents about Windows are lost. If someone burns that computer, then Windows is lost, and there will be no way to bring it back to this world. If Windows is my conscience, the computer is my brain. If I die, my brain stops functioning, and will be devoured by fungi and bacteria, and will be completely decomposed. Then my consciousness will also disappear from the universe.

Is it not amazing that my consciousness is just the acts of those mindless atoms? Somehow some carbons, oxygens, nitrogens and others got together and are contemplating and feeling the world. They think that atoms weird, when they themselves are atoms! What a strange sensation it is.

Somewhere in the vast sea of the atoms in my brain, is my consciousness. If Yahweh created people and the world so easily in just a few days by saying something, it would not be interesting at all. Why should it? Almighty Yahweh just did that, and that is that. Without Yahweh, I think it pretty much amazes me with wonders of the world.
