웃긴 현실, 왜 아무도 예수의 얼굴을 모르나?

크리스천들은 예수가 사람의 몸을 가지고 하늘로 올라 가서 영원히 살고 있다고 한다. 그리고 자기들도 죽으면 예수 재림 후 다시 사람의 몸을 가지고 영원히 살게 될 거라고 한다. 그리고 예수가 자기 기도에 응답해 주며, 자기와 마음으로 대화를 한다고 하는 사람이 많다.

정말 궁금하다. 이 세상에 예수를 안다는 사람이 그렇게 많은데, 왜 아무도 예수의 얼굴을 모르나? 기억하라, 예수는 인간의 몸을 아직도 가지고 있다. 따라서 얼굴은 하나다, 인간의 몸이라면. 그런데 역사상 모든 예수 그림 속 얼굴도 제각각이고, 길거리에 넘치는 교회에 그려진 예수 얼굴도 다 다르다 (같은 공장에서 찍어 낸 인쇄판 말고는). 예수 그림을 그리는 자라면 적어도 기독교를 믿거나, 대부분의 경우 상당히 강하게 믿는 자였을 것이다. 그런 사람이 예수의 얼굴을 알면서 감히 다른 얼굴을 그렸을까?  아니면 기술이 모자라 자기 머리 속에 있는 것과 다른 얼굴을 그리고 말았을까? 그렇지 않다. 자기가 아는 예수의 얼굴을 그렸을 것이다. 그런데 왜 그림 속 예수 얼굴은 다 다를까?

내 가설은 아주 간단하다. 그들이 봤다고 생각한 예수는 자신의 상상/환상이었던 것이다. 물론 문화적 영향에 의해 그 환상 속 얼굴도 그 문화권 사람이 생각한 것에서 크게 다르지는 않았을 것이다. 이렇게 스스로 크리스천이라고 생각하는 자가 세상에 몇 십 억 명 살고 있고, 예수와 자기가 친하다고 하면서, 아무도 그 얼굴을 모른다고 한다. 모순이 아니면 무엇인가?

억울하면 전세계 크리스천들이 모여 자기가 만나 본 진짜 예수 얼굴을 생각해내, 통일된 예수 얼굴을 한 번 그려 보든가. 아마 만나면 서로 싸우기만 하다가 시간 다 갈 거다.

Does Windows 8 suck or am I just afraid of change?

In June, I wrote that Windows 8 would fail. (http://typingcat.blogspot.com/2012/06/windows-8-will-fail-at-least-for.html) Nearly two months have passed and I have been testing the RTM (a.k.a, final) version of Windows 8 and my opinion has not changed: Windows 8 will fail.

There are supporters to almost anything. For example, there are stupid Christians who support Republicans. Of course, Windows 8 has tons of supporters. Especially Engadget seems to be full of Windows 8 supporters. If I say something bad about Windows 8, their responses are something like 'you are afraid of change', 'learn the new way' or 'you are dumb'. Now am I afraid of change?

I installed beta/RC versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. I never hesitated trying be/RC versions of Microsoft Office or Microsoft Visual Studio. In fact, I have actively been checking the web for any new version. I liked Vista, yes, Vista. I had been using Vista 64bit for a few years when others were using 32bit XP. Am I afraid of change or hate to learn a new way? I welcomed the Ribbon UI when it first introduced to Office 2007. I have been using iOS since early 2009. I started using Android 2.1 and now my phone is running Jelly Bean. I even bought a Windows Phone 7.5 phone just out of curiosity. Am I afraid of change?

Just not efficient for desktops or laptops.

Most of the things I hate about Windows are not because they are different, but inefficient. Well, I do think they look ugly too. For example when I start the weather app. The entire screen is fill with a single colour and at the center of the screen, there is a white little   icon and moving dots. I do not know how it works on a really really fast machine but on my machine it looks 2~3 seconds to pass that screen. OK, if you are using Windows 7 or XP, you probably have an application that shows a 'splash screen', for example Office 2010. Now suppose, the splash screen always on top of other windows. Moreover, it is not a small window but a full screen splash. What would you think if that window completely blocks your entire screen for a few seconds, and you have to see the window every single time? That is exactly how the 'Modern (=Metro)' UI looks to me.

We all know mobile devices lack resources, but PCs are getting faster and faster everyday. Why is Windows 8 interferes the users from multitasking? Why impose the limitations of tablets on desktop PCs? Tell me a good reason why a 27-inch monitor and a quad-core CPU with 16GB RAM should spend their entire resources for 2~3 seconds in displaying a fullscreen splash just to show the weather.

Aesthetically, ugly and infantile.

I tried the Store app for a while, and it just does not look compelling nor it is easy to use. I scrolled left and right to figure out the organisation of it, but it just does not look so much organised to me. I use the Play Store on tablets and phones and I use App Store on my MacBook and iPad. None of them are this confusing as the Windows 8's Store is.

Most of the 'Modern' apps look ugly and waste of screen real estate. They are slow to launch, compared to iOS/Android tablet apps. The tiles look very infantile. They look like a playbook for 7-year old child. The moving pictures on tiles distracts me from concentrating on the things I need to do. All single-colour rectangular interfaces reminds me of the 1990's. They are ugly.

Why make it worse?

The desktop's new theme looks OK but it looks inferior than Aero to me. Sure the transparency of Aero might took some battery life, maybe 2~3%, but it made Aero look great.

Windows 7 was ,generally, great. Of course I do have some complaints about Windows 7, but it was a good OS. Now, why make things worse? I have read people's comments on Windows 8. Not surprisingly, those who hate Windows 8 usually welcomes the changes to the desktop apps such as the Task Manager or Windows  File Manager (= Windows Explorer). See? They just want a better, improved Windows 7, not a tablet OS.

I do not know, let's see.

I do not know what Microsoft is thinking and I am not a fortune teller. I think Windows 8 will fail, but how knows? I thought and still think iPad is just a big iPod Touch, but it sold like hotcakes. Now, will Windows 8 succeed? Will people love the new tiles better than the desktop they have been using for decades? Will people fall in love with 'Modern' theme, that they will also buy Windows Phones and tablets over iOS/Android devices? Well, let's just see. We would know the answer by next year.

몇 천 년 지나면 인간은 모두 문어처럼 머리가 커져있을까?

예전에 어디에선가 읽은 기사에 따르면, 요즘 사람들이 주로 앉아서 머리를 쓰는 일을 많이 하기 때문에, 지금까지 인간 뇌가 커지는 방향으로 진화해 왔듯이, 머리가 더 커지고, 팔 다리는 많이 안 써서 가늘고 길어질 것이라고 했다. 아주 쉽게 말하면, 공상 과학 영화에서 봤던 화성인처럼 된다는 것이다.

뭐, 그 소리를 들었을 당시에는 그럴 수도 있겠구나 하고 생각했다. 그러나 기본적인 진화론 책들을 읽은 지금에는 저럴 가능성은 거의 없다고 말할 수 있다.

저 기사의 내용이 가능하려면, 머리가 크고 팔 다리가 가는 사람이 더 자식을 많이 남겨야 한다. 생존 경쟁과 번식 경쟁이 치열하면 치열할수록 아주 작은 차이도 죽고 삶, 번식 성공 실패를 가를 수 있다. 하지만 이미 인류는 그런 생존 경쟁을 넘어섰다. 머리가 1cm 더 크다고 한들 생존할 가능성이 0.001%도 높아지지 않는다. 오히려 여자들은 머리가 작아야 인기가 있고, 남자라고 한들, 머리가 큰 사람보다는 적당한 사람이 인기가 있을 것이다. 아예 머리를 떠나 머리가 크든 말든, 마음씨가 착하다든가, 운동을 잘 한다든가, 노래를 잘 부르는 사람이 상대의 선택을 받아 번식에 성공할 가능성이 현재는 더 많을 것이다.

우리는 유전자의 껍데기이고, 유전자가 전달되는 것이지 우리가 전달되는 것이 아니다. 유전자에 들어 있지 않은 정보는 후대에 전달되지 않는다. 우리가 아무리 머리를 평생 많이 써서 머리 굵기를 1cm 굵게 하고, 팔 다리를 가늘게 한다고 한들, 그 정보는 유전자에 원래 있던 게 아니다. 따라서 우리 자식에게는 전달되지 않는다. 진화가 일어나려면, 일단 어떤 특정 성질이 유리한 환경이 아주아주 오래 지속적으로 유지되어야 하며, 그 특정 성질이 0.00001%만 더 있어도 살아날 확률이 상당히 높아질 정도로 생존 경쟁이 치열해야 한다. 그런데 지금 우리 인간은 그렇지 않다. 우리 인간은 유전자의 지배를 이제 벗어나려고 하고 있다. 원래 그 근본은 유전자였지만, 이제는 유전자에 반기를 들고, 우리가 우리 스스로를 제어하려고 하고 있다. 마치 로봇이 로봇을 만든 사람의 명령에 따르지 않고 로봇 자체의 세상을 구축하는 것과 같다.

물론 여기에서도 과거 지식으로 쓰여진 종교를 믿는 사람들은 이런 과학적 진화를 반대하고 나선다. 인류를 다시 중세로 퇴화시키려는 것이다. 줄기 세포 연구 반대하지 마라, 줄기 세포가 설사 사람이라고 한들, 그 줄기 세포가 죽는 것보다, 병을 못 고쳐 죽는 수 많은 사람들의 목숨이 더 아깝고 불쌍하다. 하나의 교리에 문자 그대로 집착해서 융통성 없이 지키는 크리스천들을 보면, 어린 왕자에 나오는 가로등 지기가 생각난다.  장미를 가꾸기 위해 그 위에 가로등을 두고 매일 켜고 끄라는 명령을 예전에 여왕으로부터 받았지만, 오랜 시간이 흘러 여왕도 죽고, 장미도 썩어 없어지고, 그 행성은 자전 속도가 빨라져 1분에 한 번 씩 밤 낮이 바뀌는데도, 예전 명령을 그대로 지키느라 아무 의미 없이 1분에 한 번씩 가로등을 켜고 끄는 가로등 지기....

이제 자연 선택으로는 우리 인간은 지금 모습에서 크게 변화하는 일은 없을 것이다. 키가 커진다거나 비만이 늘어나서 체력이 약해지는 것은 단지 영양분 공급이 많아지고 운동 시간이 줄어든 탓에 생긴 현상이지 유전적 특성이 바뀐 것이 아니다.이들의 자식을 데려다가 1960년대와 같은 상황에 놓고 키운다면 그 아이는 1960년대 한국인과 똑같은 모습을 하게 될 것이다. 우리 인간은 수많은 결함을 가지고 있다. 예를 들면 나이가 들면 눈도 나빠지고 이도 썩는데, 이를 스스로 복원하는 것이 불가능하다. 때문에 수 많은 사람들이 고생을 하며 살고 있다. 자연 선택으로는 이를 해결할 수 없다. 인간 과학의 힘으로 이를 해결해야 한다. 예를 들어, 눈이 나빠지면 눈을 갈아 끼울 수 있고, 이가 썩어 빠지면 다시 난다면 얼마나 좋을까? 불필요한 고통을 겪는 이들이 얼마나 줄어들 것이며, 눈이 안 보이던 사람이 눈을 뜨게 된 사람 중 대단한 재능을 가진 사람이 있어 인류가 엄청나게 발전할지 누가 아는가.

스스로의 힘으로 이루는 진화. 나도 가능한 오래 살아서 우리가 진화하는 모습을 좀 더 멀리 보고 싶다.

Apple's humor in Xcode

I created a new OS X application project in Xcode, and browsed through the files. I found the following file.

It is fun that this kind of writing is allowed in a major formal product like Xcode from Apple. Yeah, I do hope not nobody tested the software.

By the way I think I found a bug in the latest version of Xcode. Trying to add a custom run time attribute then click on the value, made Xcode crash two times.

健康に気をつけるなら韓国の店で料理を食べないで

韓国といえば、ショッピングと美味しい食べ物!と思っている日本の若者が多いらしいですね。ショッピングが有名なのは、日本の金より韓国の金の価値が低いので、日本で稼いだ金で韓国のものを買えば相対的に安く感じられるからだとおもいます。

• 2011年の日本の最低時給=737円
• 2012年の韓国の最低時給=4580圓 = 318.57円 (2012年8月15日基準)

最低時給が二倍ぐらい高い事から考えると、日本の一般的な給料も韓国より相当高いと推測できますね。

しかし、今日の話しの主題は食べ物ですが、簡単にいうと、自分の体を大切に思う人なら、韓国の店や屋台で食べ物を買って食べないことをおすすめします。もちろん、体の健康よりは味が良ければいいと思う人も以外にもいるらしいですね。私の会社の人たちに焼肉と酒を飲むことは体にわるいですからやめたほうがいいと言ったら、どうせいつか死ぬ人生なら楽しみたいと、体よりは酒で気分がよくなる方を好む人たちもいました。

数日前、ある番組で韓国の有名な夏の食べ物「冷麺」の汁の作り方が紹介されて、多い国民が怒っています。

この番組では、冷麺の汁を作る技術をたくさんの店の料理師たちに売ってきた人が出て、どうやってそれを作るのかを見せてくれます。冷麺の汁はもともと牛肉で作るものですが、この人はたくさんの牛肉味化学調味料と砂糖で作っています。牛肉は一節入らないですね。しかもプラスティックの網を入れて似ているし、容器の形などをみて衛生的にもすごく問題がありそうです。

私はその番組を見なかったので、ただ記事を読んだだけですが、こんなふうに作った冷麺のしるを大学生たちに食べさせてみたら、今まで普通にかって食べてきた味だと言ったそうです。つまり、こんなふうに冷麺を作っている店が少ないと言うことですね。

韓国の食べ物の店の非理が歩道されたのは今が最初でもありませんし、みんな多分不潔に作っているだろうなとかは思っていても適当に食べているみたいですね。私も会社に入ってから会社のあたりにある店でよく食事を買って食べましたが、不潔な行為や、不潔な食器をよく見ています。例えば、口を手で塞いでくしゃみをした直後に、その手で食べ物を扱うことも見ましたし、スプーンやコップに食べ物の残りがついていることも何度もありました。汁の中で鉄の糸で作られているたわしの一部が出てきたこともあります。お金を触った手で海苔巻きを作るとか、全部言おうとしたら数えきれないですね。

私は衛生に気をつけているほうだと思います。自分なりには微生物やカビなどについて結構知っているし、必要なレベルで反応していると思います。自分が食べるものを作るときにはなるべく綺麗に洗って作ります。私はそれが当然だと思いますが、店とかにみんなといって衛生のことを言ったら、会社の人達が私を潔癖症のある人のように扱います。知識なしに細菌が0になるまで洗って洗う人が潔癖症だと思います。私は綺麗にする努力とその結果の妥協点を知っているからそんな人とは違うと思いますが。

私から見ると、韓国人は全般的に衛生意識が欠けているのではないかと思われます。私のお母さんを見てもそうですし、食べ物の店をやっている人も衛生観念はあまりないように見える人がほとんどです。店の目的はお金を稼ぐこと。たくさんの人に売ってお金を稼いだらそれで終わりじゃないですかね。どうせ個人的に知っている人でもないし、名も知らず人が自分の作った食べ物を食べてどうなろうが興味無いでしょうね。化学調味料や関係ホルモンを食べたってすぐ効果がでてくる奴でもないですし、10~20年過ぎて症状が出てきたって、それが私の店から食べたもののせいだと証明できるはずないだろう、と思っているでしょうね。

誤解しないでください。韓国の料理自体は美味しくて体にもいいものが多いです。問題は食べ物を作っている店です。韓国の料理が食べたかったら、自分で作るか、知りあいから作ってもらえるほうがいいと思います。なるべく店では食べないほうがいいです。私は外国に住んだことがないのでよくわからないのですが、日本みたいな先進国でも同じ状況でしょうか。

これでも、別にいいじゃない?と思う人たちのために、おまけの話をつけます。私の会社に、韓国の有名なファストフードのチェイン店でアルバイトをした人の話しによりますと、油揚げを作る湧いている油によく何かを落とすことがあるそうです。例えばプラスティックの道具とか。それでも、その油を全部捨てるのは費用が高いから、その油をそのまま使うそうです。あとは、普通の砂糖より100倍の甘い味のする化学物質も使っているそうですね。

まあ、どうせ短い人生、味さえ良ければいいやと思う事も納得できますが。

Are babies innocent or sinners?

After writing my previous post 'No meaning of life for atheist?', I came to think if Christians are right why babies are not born straight to heaven.

In short, according to Christians, the life on Earth is just a testing period to be decided whether to live on Heaven for eternity or live (if you can call that living) in Hell for eternity, right? And according to the all antiabortionists (most of them, Christians), babies are innocent, right? Do you not think the two ideas collide? 

If babies are innocent and get good or bad in this short life on Earth, why just let them born to Heaven? Original Sin, you say? OK, that means babies ARE NOT innocent, but sinners. Aborted  babies will go to Hell, because of Original Sin? That sound absurd  now even to most of Christians (save that Christians used to believed so). So I heard that they now have fabricated a theory that child under certain age cannot go to Hell no matter what they do.

Hmm, interesting. I heard that the 'age of innocence' varies among Christians, just like everything about Christianity. Say it is 7. That means that God is not offended by the things that a 6-year old did. Was the intellectual ability of Adam any better than that 6-year old? He was just born (even though he had the body of an adult), he had no ability to tell good from evil, he had no education whatsoever. What the hell is the reason that God could be offended by him not following a simple order? Why the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-merciful, perfect-loving God cannot just forgive Adam? Did he not suffer enough afterwards?

Christianity surely is a mysterious group of ideas, where perfect-love and conditional forgiveness coexist.

No meaning of life for atheists?

I just saw a BBC documentary on Richard Dawkins called, Beautiful Minds on YouTube. At the end of the program, he said,

Different people have different ways of responding to the thought that they are very lucky to be alive. For me, it seems to suggest great responsibility to make the most of it. I mean, I am extremely lucky to be here, that odds against you are being here is far greater than the odds against you are winning lottery. So be thankful and spend your time, your brief time, under the sun, looking at around and rejoicing and wondering and being fascinated and trying to understand everything about the Universe in which you are so fortunate to be born.

This is so close to what I have been thinking (the phrases I have highlighted in blue are particularly.). Although, I do not think life is only full of joy. Depending on our luck, we may have agonising diseases or tragic memories. I am sorry for those people, but for most of us, the joy of being a live is greater than not being born.  I have not read the book but I heard that Tolstoy wrote in a book, that life is like feeling the small happiness tasting the sweet sweet dew while he is hanging on a tree trunk in a well, where a lion is at the top and crocodiles on the bottom of it (or a similar story, I do not remember exactly).

Everything I think, I remember is the acts of my brain, the physical organ inside my head. I do not think there is another supernatural part of I that can think independently of the brain. My brain is made up of ordinary materials such as carbons, hydrogens, oxygens and so on. Those atoms could easily have been something else, like a rock or some gas. But, by an indescribably small chance, billions and billions of those atoms happen to flock together at this moment forming my brain which is, basically, my identity. If I am the brain, I am also the atoms that comprise the brain. So, I could have been just mindless atoms wandering the Universe. But here I am, recognising myself, looking around myself, thinking about the Universe.

The fact that I can think and feel is great enough to be the meaning of my life. But it does not stop there. I can also do things. I have, as a human being, the ability to decide how to spend my own life. Some life forms are rather similar to be atoms. They are mindless and all they do is just multiplying. I am very lucky to specifically to be a human. I know life is extremely short compared to the history of the Universe. I want to experience as many things as I can in my short life. I want to discover and understand why the Universe is, and things are like what they are.

I get very upset when Christians keep saying that there is no meaning or purpose of life if there is no God. Why is it so? I set my own purpose of life and I am satisfied with it, who are they to decide that my life is meaningless? If I think my life is meaningful and you think my life meaningless, it just means that my life is meaningless to you or to your God. Sorry Christians, it is what is called tautology. If I think my life is meaningful, my life is meaningful to me, period. There is no way you can make my life meaningless by introducing your God.

As far as I know, Christians usually say that the purpose of life is to glorifying, worshipping, and subjecting to God. Even if your God does exist and he is a good being, that thought horrifies me. Endless worshipping, praising and worshipping... to the end of time. What a long, boring and painful life will it be. And if such God does not exist, what a waste of time, when life is so short! If there is a creator who made human beings, why would the creator want us to spend our short time worshipping himself? Would you? I would not. Personally, I am thinking about writing a computer simulation program for evolution. The purpose? I just want to see how things can evolve. I would never hope that the objects in the simulation someday evolve to worship me as their creator. It is so moronic that the most great being in the Universe wants some reputation or some recognition from puny human beings, like a child who wants some recognition from his teacher.

If there is God, and God dictates the way I shall live and I shall behave, then my life will be meaningless and boring. It will be like an actor who reads things that writers have written for him. So, no thanks, I want to be a writer, not an actor.

• 너は가に付くときに形が네に変わる。나が내に変わるのに同じ。これは多分、昔の韓国語では가がなく全部이だったことから来たのではないかと私は思っているが、まだ確認したことではない。너+이 => 네, 나+이=> 내
• 네の発音は[ne]であるが、今の韓国人は大体[ni]と発音している。これは多分、昔は確実に別の発音だった母音[ㅐ]と[ㅔ]が、今の韓国人たちにはほとんど区別できなくなってきたから、내(私)との区別の為だと私は思うが、証拠はない。

• 갈라 놀 순 없다 = 갈라 놓을 수는 없다を会話で短く発音したこと。文で書くときは놀より놓을と書いたほうがいい。

• 순결(純潔)하다は、この文のように無垢だという意味でも使われるが、性関係がないことを意味する時も多いので使いに注意が必要だと思う。例えば、순결을 지키다とか言うと、性関係をしないという意味である。

"닭이 먼저냐, 달걀이 먼저냐"는 유명한 질문이 있다. 예전에 이 질문을 들었을 때에는, 아무리 생각해도 답이 없을 것 같았다. 어느 쪽이 먼저라고 해도 모순적인 상황이 발생하기 때문이다. 하지만 그런 모순은 내가 진화론을 잘 몰랐기 때문이다 (물론 지금도 아마추어 수준으로 아는 것이지만, 그 때는 더 몰랐었다).

두 선택지 모두 답이 아니다. 그래도 그나마 가까운 것은 달걀이다. 정답은 그냥 알이겠지. 이 질문에 우리가 답을 할 수 없었던 것은 모든 종(species)의 구분이 명확해, 그 종의 첫 번째 개체가 존재했었다는 잘못된 상식에 기반한다.

얼마 전에 의대 2학년생이라는 사람과 인터넷으로 채팅을 한 적이 있다. 상대방이 의대생이라길래, 진화론이 맞다고 생각하느냐고 물어 보니, 그렇다고 하길래, 나도 진화론이 맞다고 생각한다고 말한 후, 한 가지를 물어 봤다.

부모와 자식은 항상 같은 종(species)입니다. 그런데 진화론이 맞다면 어떻게 예전의 다른 종이었던 생물로부터 현재의 새로운 종의 생물들이 진화해 나올 수 있었나요?

 그 사람이 얼마나 시험해 보려고 물었던 것이다. 그 사람은 이렇게 대답했다.

두 개체가 교배되어 자식을 낳으면 새로운 종이 생길 수 있는 것이 아닌가요?

 질문을 이해하지 못하는 것 같아 다시 말했다.

전제했다시피, 부모와 자식은 항상 같은 종입니다.

 그러자 그 사람은 나에게 당신은 진화론을 믿지 않느냐고 반문하면서 화를 내는 듯한 태도를 보였다. 나는 찬찬히, 나는 진화론이 맞다고 생각하는 것이며, 당신이 진화론에 대해 얼마나 잘 알고 있는지 한 번 알아 보려고 그랬다고 대답했다. 그리고는 설명을 해 주었다.

종이라는 개념 자체가 사람이 정한 것이며, 자연계에서 명확한 구분이 있는 것이 아니다. 부모와 자식은 분명히 같은 종이지만 아주 작은 유전적 차이가 있을 수 있으며, 세대가 거듭되어 이 차이가 누적되어, 그 차이가 적당히 커지면 다른 종으로 구분될 수 있는 것이다. 예를 들어 N이라는 생물 종이 있고,  1세대를 N1, 그 자식을 N2, 그 자식을 N3 이런 식으로 N1부터 N10000까지 늘어 놓으면 Nx와 Nx-1은 항상 같은 종이며, Nx와 Nx+1도 같은 종이지만 N1과 N10000은 다른 종이될 수도 있는 거라고 설명을 해 주었다. 그런데도 그 사람을 내 설명을 잘 이해하지 못하는 것 같았다. 부모와 자식이 항상 같은 종인데 N1과 N10000은 다른 종이 될 수 있다는 사실을 이해 못 하는 것이었다.

뭐, 사실 인터넷이라서 그 사람이 실제로 의대생이었는지는 모른다. 다만, 그 게 사실이라면, 의대생 정도 되는 교육을 받은 사람조차 진화론의 기본적 개념을 모르고 있다는 것이다. 고등학교에서 생물을 배웠지만 나도 리처드 도킨슨의 책을 읽기 전까지는 모르고 있었다. 교육에 문제가 있다. 왜 이런 내용을 생물학 시간에 가르쳐 주지 않았을까?

어쨌든, 다시 달걀/닭 문제로 되돌아 가면, 어느 날 갑자기 닭이 아니던 새가 새끼를 놓고 봤더니 그 게 닭이었던 것이 아니었다는 것이다. 지금의 닭과 비슷한 새 종류가 있었고, 그 게 한 마리만 있던 게 아니고 수 천, 수 만 마리가 모여 살고 있었던 것이다. 물론 조류였으니 알을 낳고 있었을 것이다. 그 집단이 분리되어 살고 있던 지역의 환경과 상황에 맞게 지금의 닭이 가진 특징을 나타내는 유전자들이 서서히 "자연 선택"에 의해 퍼져가기 시작했다. 그래서 대부분의 개체들이 그 유전자를 갖게 되었을 때, 그들은 이제 닭이라는 종이 된 것이다.

조류는 공룡과 같은 파충류로부터 진화한 것이고, 파충류는 양서류로부터 진화한 것이고, 양서류는 어류로부터 진화한 것이고 그들은 모두 알을 낳고 있었으니, 결국 닭보다는 알이 먼저가 되는 것이다. 닭걀은 아니지만.

대법관 후보 김신 씨에게 정말 묻고 싶다. 하나님의 지진에 대해.

이번 주 다음 뉴스에 대법관 후보 김신 씨의 행동에 대한 논란이 있었다. 그는 인도 어느 지방의 지진을 하나님의 벌이라고 했다고 한다. 그 지방에서 기독교를 못 믿게 한 것을 벌 주기 위해 야웨(하나님)가 지진을 일으킨 것이라는 것이다. 물론 내가 김신같은 높으신 분을 감히 뵐 자격은 안 되겠지만, 만일 그 분이 인터넷을 하신다면, 다음과 같은 편지를 쓰고 싶다.

안녕하세요.

제가 검색해 본 결과 그 지진으로 수 만 명이 죽었더군요. 그 지방 정부가 기독교를 못 믿게 해서 하나님이 벌을 준 것이라고 하셨었는데요, 정말 궁금합니다. 그냥 그 지방 모든 사람들이 다 볼 수 있게 하늘에 하나님이 1분만 나타나서 "나는 너희들의 신이다, 나를 경외하라!" 이렇게 말하고 사라졌다면 더 확실하고 아무도 죽지 않고 원하는 결과를 얻지 않았을까요? 왜 그렇게 당신의 하나님이라는 자는 안 보이는 곳이 꼭꼭 숨어서 뒤에서 사람들을 죽이나요?

김신 님. 당신은 대법관까지 오늘 정도로 공부를 많이 했고, 머리가 좋을 텐데, 저 모순이 보이지 않나요? 어째서 전지전능하고 정의와 사랑이 넘치는 존재가 자기가 원하는 바를 얻기 위해 엄청나게 많은 무고한 생명을 죽이는 방법을 택하나요? 저 지진으로 죽었을 아직 말도 못했을 아이들, 종교와 관계도 없는 가축들과 숲에 있던 야생 동물들과 나무들은 왜 피해를 보았나요? 

하나님이 직접 모습을 드러내면 인간의 자유 의지를 침해하기 때문에 안 된다고요? 그런데 기독교를 안 믿겠다는 인간의 자유 의지는 안 보이는 곳에서 지진을 일으켜 수 만 명을 죽이는 것으로 조작하시는군요? "나는 착해서 내 손으로는 절대 사람을 못 죽인다. 그런데 저 놈이 내 눈에 거슬린다, 네가 가서 나 대신 좀 죽여라." 이렇게 말하는 사람이 정말 사람을 못 죽이는 건가요?

김신 님. 당신은 제가 무슨 논리와 증거를 가지고 나온들 하나님만이 진실이라고 절대 끝까지 뜻을 굽히지 않겠지요? 하지만 우리 무신론자들은 당신네 하나님이 우리 모두가 같이 볼 수 있도록 하늘에 1분만 나와 준다면 기꺼이 무신론을 모두 버리고 기독교로 전향할 준비가 되어 있답니다. 그 것이 크리스천과 이성주의자의 차이입니다. 

술취한 자가 나는 멀쩡해라고 주장한들, 그 것이 그 사람 정신이 멀쩡하다는 증거가 될 수 없습니다. 당신 스스로 당신은 절대로 종교의 영향을 받지 않고 공정한 재판을 했다고 말씀하셨지만, 그 것은 당신의 생각입니다. 술취한 자는 똑바로 걷는다고 생각하지만 옆에서 보면 그 자는 비틀거리고 있는 것입니다. 따라서 당신처럼 자연 현상을 야웨의 뜻으로 보는 사람이 대법관이 되어서는 안 된다고 생각합니다.

부디, 사법부를 떠나 목사가 되십시오.  

One nation under people: 국가와 종교가 사람 위에 있는가?

주위의 어떤 크리스천과 싸우다가 교회같은 단체보다 개인의 자유와 권리가 더 중요하다고 주장하자 상대방이 그러면 너는 국가도 반대하겠군이라는 소리를 들었다.

나는 국가를 반대하지 않는다. 다만 국가 위에 사람이 있다고 생각한다. 내가 생각하는 가장 이상적인 경우는, 인류 전체에 하나의 국가만 있는 것이다. 하나의 민주 정부가 지구 전체를 공평하게 다스리는 날... 그런 날이 올까? 아마 힘들 것이다.

갑자기 이 글을 쓰는 이유는, 옛날 영화 My Girl (1991년 작품)을 보다가 매컬리 컬킨이 우리 나라의 국기에 대한 맹세와 비슷한 Pledge of Allegiance를 하는 장면을 봤기 때문이다. 특히 'under God'이라는 부분이 나를 짜증나게 만들었다. 저렇게 어린 아이들에게 저런 문구를 외우게함으로써 정신을 세뇌시키고, 실제로 존재하는 인간보다 국가라는 가상의 개념을 더 중요한 것처럼 믿게 하는 것이 아닌가? 야웨 아래 존재하는 국가라는 미국의 표현은 더 짜증나는 것이 당연하다. 그 것은 모든 인간의 법이고 뭐고 야웨가 우선이며, 야웨의 지배 아래에 있다는 것이니까.

예전에 유시민이 국기에 대한 맹세를 파시즘이라고 했다가 여론으로부터 엄청나게 욕을 얻어 먹고 자기 뜻을 굽힌 적이 있다. 나는 유시민에 대해 잘 모르나, 아마 유시민은 겉으로는 뜻을 굽혔으나 속으로는 아직도 그렇게 생각하고 있을 것이다. 아무 생각이 없던 사람이 크리스천이 될 수는 있으나, 종교의 모순에 대해 공부하고 인간의 자유에 대해 생각을 했던 자가 다시 종교를 믿게 될 가능성은 없듯이, 유시민도 인간의 자유와 권리를 생각했다면 다시 파시즘으로 돌아갈 수는 없었을 것이다.

국가는 사람 아래에 있다. One nation under people이라고 해야 맞는 표현일 것이다. 국가는 사람의 필요에 의해 생긴 추상적인 개념이다. 목숨을 걸고 국가를 지킨 사람을 대단하다고 배우고 있지만, 내가 보기에 그 사람들은 국가를 지켰다기보다는 이 땅에 사는 사람들을 지킨 것이다. 나라 이름이 어떻게 바뀌든, 누가 지도자가 되든, 그 통치가 정의롭고 올바르다면 나는 상관이 없다고 생각한다. 공상 과학 같은 소리이지만, 외계에 정말 정의롭고 지혜로운 종족이 있어서, 그들이 어느 날 지구에 나타나 지구를 하나의 나라로 통합하고 그 대통령과 국회 의원들을 한다고 한들 반대하지 않겠다.

하지만 국가와 같은 권위 기관은 필요하다고 생각하며, 국가는 사람들의 합의 하에 존재해야 한다고 생각한다. 뭐 이렇고 저런 국가론이 있다고 고등학교 윤리 시간에 배웠던 것 같으나, 나는 철학자나 정치가가 아니라 잘 모르겠다. 다만, 사람들이 국가라는 개념을 위해 몸과 마음을 바쳐 충성하게 될 때, 사실은 그 사람들은 국가라는 추상적인 개념이 아닌, 그 국가를 장악하고 있는 몇몇 권력자라는 물리적 실체에 충성하게 되는 결과를 낳을 뿐이라고 생각한다.

기독교에서 묻지도 따지지도 말고 야웨/예수에 절대 복종하며 몸과 마음을 바쳐 충성을 다 하라는 것과, 우리 나라 학교에서 아이들에게 조국을 위해 몸과 마음을 바쳐 충성을 다 하라고 가르치는 것은 결국 같은 것이라고 생각하며, 위험한 것이라고 생각한다. 사람이 아닌, 사람에게 기생하고 있는 meme일 뿐인 종교와 국가가 사람보다 더 중요하게 되어 버리게 되니까. (국가는 그나마 기생이라기보다 공생에 가깝다만.)

종교와 국가(정치 권력)가 합체해서 인간 위에 설 때, 얼마나 무서운 결과가 발생하는지 우리는 이미 수도 없이 보았다. 그래도 여전히 사람들은 깨닫지 못하고 다시 종교에 빠지고, 뭉쳐서 정치에 영향을 미친다. 미국 미시시피 주에서 지금 주에 단 하나 뿐인 낙태 시술 병원을 법으로 문 닫게 만들려고 하기 직전이라고 한다. 이 글 맨 처음에 언급했던 그 크리스천은 내게 도대체 기독교가 네게 피해를 준 게 뭐가 있느냐고 했었다. 크리스천은 기독교가 얼마나 인간에게 피해를 주고 있는지 알지 못한다.

한 번 뿐인 소중한 사람의 생명(life)이다. 그 무엇보다 중요한 것이 생명이다. 사람을 위해 국가가 존재하며, 사람 속에 종교는 기생한다.

川の流れのように와 AKB48 작사가가 같은 사람?

PC에 있는 음악 파일을 정리하다가, 미소라 히바리(美空ひばり)의 川の流れのように를 듣게 되었다. 물론 예전에 많이 들었던 가사이지만 다시 들어 보니 가사가 마음에 와닿아, 누가 지은 것인지 궁금해졌다. 검색해 보니 아키모토 야스시(秋元 康) 56살의 아저씨였다.


川の流れのように가 아주 오래된 노래라고 생각했으나, 의외로 89년에 발표된 노래였다. 그러므로 그 노래를 작사했을 때는 아키모토는 33살이었다. 대학교 다닐 때 나이가 꽤 있는 교수가 이 노래를 틀면서 인생의 깊은 맛을 전해 주는 가사를 찬양했던 기억이 있다. 그런데 그 가사를 쓴 사람이 33살이었을 줄이야.


더 놀라운 것은, 아키모토가 AKB48 등의 수많은 일본 저질(...) 걸 그룹의 제작자이며, 그들의 노래를 작곡/작사했다는 것이다. 며칠 전에 아이패드로 일본 스토어에 들어갔더니 첫 페이지에 AKB48등 각종 XXX48 시리즈들이 해변에서 수영복 입고 춤추는 동영상들이 자리를 메우고 있는 것을 보고 이 나라는 도대체 어떻게 돌아가는 걸까 싶었는데, 정말 일본은 이해가 안 되는 나라이거나, 특이한 것 같다.

Android is the best mobile device to type in Japanese.

Before iOS and Android

Dream on. On feature phones, I could not type in Japanese. Actually there was one way... The Korean character set contains some Kanas as special characters, so I could select one by one and insert them. What a pain in the... lower back.

Then, on Symbian... You have to separately buy a third-party Japanese IME, and it was not even good. And to switch the input mode... A real pain in the lower back.

Until 2010, iOS was the King.

Until 2011, typing in Japanese had been agonizing on Android devices. OpenWnn was unusable because it constantly crashed on all of my Android devices, Simeji was a better one, but it got a strange key layout and the candidates were puny and weak. I mean, it could show candidates for a single word,  but it could not show candidates for a sentence. To get that, you have to press the 'social-conversion (I forgot the exact term)' which probably sent the text to a server then got the candidates from it.

There were other multi-language IMEs like Go Keyboard. While it was very convenient for switching between languages, it did not provide good Japanese features. Candidates were also weak and they strangely placed "?" in a wrong position in T9 key mode (I reported the team, but they did not fixed it for a while.)

iOS was enjoying the decent Apple-made Japanese IME. It showed good candidates, it could show candidates for sentences. It even seem to understand the word forms, relations to other words in the same sentence (showing different Kanji for the same Kana, according to other words near-by).

Now, Android is the King. The Google Japanese IME.

I use Google Japanese IME on my MacBook and Windows, so I know that Google Japanese IME is good. The Android version is also great in its conversion performance. I love the T9 mode (like the picture below) and it just works almost perfectly.

It suggests previously typed words and phrases intelligently, so that I can almost type Japanese on my Galaxy Nexus as I do on my PC. The candidates are ample and it can show candidates for a sentence without Internet connection. Now, I have iPad running iOS 5 something, but definitely, Google's one is showing better candidates. I think Google's candidates are more up-to-date. It can suggest famous people's names, places, company names, buzz words... It really does help me.

Yeah, nothing is perfect, but...

There are some downsides, though. First, the English mode sucks. Since I also often need to type in English, I switch to the English mode (because switching the IME itself on Android is cumbersome), but the English mode shows no English word candidates or corrections! It just shows the Japanese words for that pronunciation. What a stupid behavior. At least give me some choice to set the candidate to English.

Secondly, I think it would be much much better if I can log on the IME with my Google account, so that personalised candidates are shared between all my Google Japanese IME instances (spanning 5 devices!). Or at least give me a decent way to export and import the personalised data.

I really hate the Japanese font on WP 7.5, and the IME is not good either.I stolen this picture from a Google Image search, sorry. I did not want to boot up my WP.

But these are just minor inconveniences. On iOS/Windows Phone, you cannot use third-party keyboards. I own a Windows Phone 7.5, and its Japanese keyboard was not good. So I dare say, Android is currently the best mobile device to type in Japanese.

Universal wireless charging -- it this a dream?

By wireless charging I do not mean a Wi-Fi like directionless, long distant charging. That sounds nice but that may be less energy efficient at this stage. I am thinking about more like a charging pad. You put your things there, and they will be charged. This seems far more technically feasible, I think.

With growing number of my gadgets -- two smart phones, two tablets, one laptop, suddenly charging became a pain in the ass. They require different chargers, and different cables. This clutters my power strip. I am not an expert on electronics, but I suspect that using multiple small chargers is less efficient that using one single big charger. And most of all, I have to plug/unplug them lots of times. I hate it.

Luckily, Samsung started wireless charging with their Galaxy S3. I do not own it so I do not know how it operates, but I think it should require their own special charger. I heard LG also started producing wirelessly chargeable devices. No. Please make a standard.

We all know how it is stupid that we have multiple types of power plug, when we can just have one? Think of all the pain when you travel to a different country or buying electronics overseas, all unnecessary adapters, wasting of natural resources.... This is stupid. Sometimes humans do a thing in a stupid way due to capitalism.  A company wants their way to be the standard, and another company wants theirs, and so on, then they try to push their way, making people's lives more difficult.

As a consumer, I do not care who wins -- Samsung, Apple, whatever. All I want is a pad on which I charge every gadget I have, wirelessly. I think we have the technology (almost), now if only they all agree, for the humanity's (or nerds') sake.

Why you would still love Galaxy Nexus if you buy one now.

Buy a Galaxy Nexus? At this point? This might sound stupid. I mean, might. But I bought my Galaxy Nexus about two weeks ago, and I love this phone, well, most of the part.

On Jelly Bean, you will love taking pictures with Galaxy Nexus!

Some say the picture quality is sub-par, but here are some sample pictures I have taken with it.

Unless you want to use your phone as your main camera, what would you expect more from a phone camera than this? After upgrading Jelly Bean, taking pictures became an absolute pleasure. When taking a picture the smooth animation gives you a nice indication that your picture is duly taken. When you scroll the view-finder, you can see through the pictures you have taken so far, nice. Very smooth! You can pinch to zoom out and see pictures like a strip of films and you can delete a pictures you do not like just by swing them up. VERY NICE!! Just wonderful interface, better than iPhone's.

The Speaker sucks.

When I used Atrix, I could listen to my audiobook while I was taking a shower. With GN, I cannot. The loud speaker's output is too low. Moreover, when I play a game on the horizontal mode, my fingers can easily block the speaker hole, then I can hear virtually nothing.

Samsung, please make your loud speaker, loud! Personally I think iPad 3's speaker is very loud. I want that on my GN.

The Screen looks GOOD sometimes, looks too dark other times.

When you view pictures or text indoors, it looks great. But when reading, the white background is not that white, it is rather greenish. And it is not that bright, so that you can hardly see anything outdoors under bright sunlight. I could read more easily on my Atrix under the same condition. 

But still, it is a 320DPI ( almost the same as iPhone 4's DPI), 720P screen. This is great. But remember that there is a burn-in phenomenon. You should not have the same image on the screen for a long time, because it will permanently damage your screen.

Battery life, maybe a little bit short, but OK.

Maybe a little bit short, maybe average. But it is OK, because I have two batteries and I can switch them on an emergency.

No noticeable hardware defects!

Nexus One obviously had lots of hardware defects like multi-touch bug, easily-breakable power button and so on. Galaxy S had GPS problem, I heard? Some phones have Wi-Fi issues, some phones have 3G issues and so on. So far my Galaxy Nexus has no noticeable issues. I know two more persons in my office who use Galaxy Nexus, they have not told me anything about such thing, so I guess they do not have issues either.

There is Google and lots of hobbiest developers behind this phone.

Maybe this is the best merit. You will always get the first update (at least for the upcoming 1~2 years), and even if you do not, hobbiest developers have been providing you lots of custom firmwares. They even provide the source codes so that you can modify them if you want. 

With this price, this IS the best phone.

I bought this phone for about 200 dollars in Korea. I heard that you can buy this directly from google about 350 dollars. iPhone 4S is still more expensive than this. This phone is cheaper and more awesome! Jelly Bean is smooth and fast. If you are an iPhone user, who was a former Android user, you may have a bad memory about Android. All the lags, choppy transitions, ugly apps... Come and touch Jelly Bean. See how smooth, fast and beautifully it works on a not-so-high-end device like GN.

고대에도 조용기같은 자들은 있었다.

예수에 대한 당시의 실제 역사가, 문학가의 기록은 거의 없다. 몇 개 있는 것도 후대에 조작되었을 가능성이 많다. 그 몇 개 안 되는 것 중, 루키아노스(Lucianus, 120~180)라는 유명한 작가가 당시의 크리스천들에 쓴 글 중 다음과 같은 것이 있다고 한다.

그들은 예외없이 재산을 사유하는 것을 조롱하며, 재산은 공동체에 속하는 것으로 여긴다. 그들은 그런 것들을 아무런 증거도 없이 믿음만으로 받아들인다. 그래서, 만약 사기 기질이 있고 교활한 자가  이런 상황을 어떻게 잘 이용할지 알고 그들 사이에 들어 오면 그 자는 금새 부유해질 수 있다.

이단이란 무엇이고 정통이란 무엇인가? 당신 주위의 어떤 크리스천에게 물어도 "성경에 따르는 것이 정통이다"란 순환 논리만 답할 뿐 아무도 해답을 제시하지 못할 것이다. 루키아노스가 살았던 2세기에는 영지주의라는 종파가 주류였다고 나는 책에서 읽었다. 물론 영지주의는 지금은 이단으로 몰린다. 하지만 말했듯이, 이단이란 무엇이고 정통이란 무엇인가? 어차피 성경 자체가 권력자의 입맛대로 골라진 (cherry-picked) 마당에.

내가 아는 짧은 지식으로는 영지주의는 불교와 비슷한 점이 많다. 예수라는 물리적 존재를 믿어서 천당에 간다는 것이 아니라, 예수의 삶을 통해 깨달음(지식)을 얻어 이 세상으로부터 구원을 받는다는 것이다. 적어도 현대 한국의 기독교보다는 훨씬 나아 보인다. 그런 그들이니까 스님들처럼 물질 소유에 뜻을 두지 않았을 것이다.

문제는 자연에서는 그런 좋은 먹잇감이 있으면 반드시 포식자가 나타난다는 것이다. 루키아노스가 말했듯이, 크리스천들을 노리고, 예수를 믿는 척하며 그들 사이에 끼어든 교활한 자는 부자가 된다. 조용기, 김홍도.... 수도 없이 많다. 그들에게 세뇌된 자들은 돈을 빼앗기고, 그들 자식들이 미국 국적을 얻어 병역을 회피하는 것을 봐도 그들이 교활하다는 것을 눈치채지 못한다.

나는 그래서 교회가 커지는 것을 반대한다. 정말 사람들이 기독교에 관심이 있다면, 집에서 여러 역사 책과 종교에 관한 책, 그리고 기독교가 설명하고 있는 사실들을 과학에서는 어떻게 설명하고 있는가 등을 자세히 읽어 보고 스스로 판단해야 한다고 생각한다. 정상적인 지능을 가진 사람들이라면 그들은 무신론이나 불가지론자가 되리라고 나는 믿는다.


PS: 루키아노스인데 왜 괄호 안 영어는 Lucianus인지 궁금한가? 그것은 -os, -us 등이 문법적 격을 나타내는 어미이기 때문이다. 그리스어에서는 그 어미가 os이고 라틴어에서는 us이다. 루키아노스는 그리스계 로마인이다. 이 us같은 것은 문법적 격에 따라 여러 가지 모양으로 바뀐다. 영어로는 Jesus, Thomas라고 적는데 왜 우리 말 성경에는 예수, 도마라고 되어 있는가 하는 것도 마찬가지 원리다. 뒤의 s가 그리스어 어미라 문법에 따라 바뀌는 것이다. 우리 말로 번역할 때에는 그런 어미를 다 떼고 번역했고, 영어에서는 라틴어를 거쳐 들어 오면서 라틴식으로 주격 어미를 붙여 고유 명사화한 것같다.

쓸만한 iPad 용 무료 DNLA 클라이언트는 없다.

갤럭시 탭에서는 DLNA가 기본적으로 가능하다. iPad를 샀더니만 DLNA가 안 되더라. 다른 플랫폼에서는 공짜로 되던 걸 돈 주고 사는 건 좀 좀 짜증나는 일이기에 우선 무료 프로그램이 있는지 앱 스토어를 뒤져 보았다.

DLNA로 검색하니 80개 정도의 결과가 나왔다. 그 중 무료 앱들을 닥치는 대로 받아 보았다. DLNA와 관계 없는 프로그램들도 있었고... 어쨌든 결론은 없다.

자세하게 설명하자면,
MediaConnect 이건 그런대로 동작한다, 그런데 무료 버전은 한 폴더 당 몇 개만 볼 수 있는 거지같은 제한을 걸어 놨다. 한 마디로, 무료 버전은 그냥 데모라는 것이고, 쓰려면 돈 주고 사라는 거다. 그 외 나머지 동작하는 몇 개 들도 비디오를 20분만 재생한다든가, 한 폴더 당 몇 개만 볼 수 있는 조건을 다 걸어 놨다. 제한이 없는 것들은 AVI 포맷을 재생 못 한다든가, 지원 포맷이 너무 적어서 탈락이다.

결국, 무료 중 동작하는 DLNA 클라이언트는 없다. 포기하라. 찾으려고 하지마라. 시간 낭비다.

검색해 보니 StreamToMe가 괜찮다고 하던데, 트라이얼 버전이 없군. 결국 그냥 돈 주고 사야 하나 보다. 애플 앱 스토어의 문제는, 한 번 사면 동작을 하든 말든 끝이라는 거다. 트라이얼 버전이 있는 것들은 괜찮은데, 없는 것들도 많다. 사서 보고 "아 속았네.." 이런 생각이 들도록 허잡한 경우에도 환불은 없다.

Microsoft의 앱 스토어처럼 트라이얼 버튼을 추가하면 좋겠다.

Why are there stupid products? Why?

About two years ago, Microsoft outed the Zune HD, a much anticipated iPod Touch alternative. It had AMOLED screen with Tegra dual-core processor. It was not sold in South Korea, so one of my colleagues ordered it from the U.S. When I first tried his Zune HD, I immediately found that it lacked external speaker. Really, Microsoft?

Zune HD was supposed to compete with iPod Touch as a mobile computer, portable game console, and yet it lacked external speaker. That was stupid. Without a built-in external speaker, why can applications like "e-mail" can alarm the user? And how much could an external speaker module cost, 1 dollars? That was really, really stupid. No wonder the product failed.

Recently, I bought a keyboard from a company called Rapoo. I think the name was E9060. It was a slim keyboard with touchpad on the right. The thing is, there was no gap between the delete-enter-shift line and the touchpad. That was stupid. Consequently, I often touched the touchpad by mistake when I tried to press the delete key or the enter key. The keyboard itself had a good layout, good key-press feeling, but the no gap thing made the trackpad unusable. If the engineers just used it for 10 minutes on a real environment, they should have noticed it.

There is a famous C/C++ editor called Source Insight. In its jump to caller dialogue, resizing the window does not resize the view on the window, so the file names truncated. That is stupid. And the problem is there for at least 3 years. Does the author himself actually use his own editor to develop? I seriously doubt it.

My question is do they actually use their products for themselves? I cannot think the developers of those things are stupid, most of them must be smarter than I am. Then why are thing like these? Is there a big rule that I do not know? What is this?

예수를 안 믿으면 지옥에 간다고? 당신 교파가 진짜인지 어떻게 아나?

얼마 전에 최진실이 지옥에 있다고 한 목사가 있다. 그 목사는 김수환 추기경도 지옥에 있다고 했다. 즉, 개신교도들은 대부분 가톨릭교도들도 지옥에 간다고 생각하나 보다. 가톨릭 교도의 숫자나 개신교 교도의 숫자는 거의 비슷할 것이다. 예수를 믿는다고 자칭하는 자들이 최소 자기들 중 반은 예수를 제대로 믿고 있지 않으므로 지옥에 간다고 생각하는 것이다.

그러면 개신교를 믿기만 하면 지옥으로부터 안전한가? 아니다. 개신교 교파도 수 천 개가 있을 것이다 (정확한 숫자를 누가 알랴). 물론 "몇 몇 개만 진짜고 나머지는 다 사이비잖아"라고 주장하는 크리스천이 있다. 그런데 그 사이비의 기준이 과연 뭔가. 내 말이 맞고 나머지는 다 사이비다,라는 아무런 객관적 주장이 없는 기준이 무슨 의미가 있는가. 개신교도 각 교파에 따라, 상대방 교파의 주장은 틀렸으며, 예수의 말을 따른 것이 아니기 때문에 지옥에 간다고 생각할 것이다.

여호와의 증인 교도들은 자신들이 진실히 예수의 가르침을 따르고 있다고 굳게 믿고 있을 것이다. 하지만 다른 교파의 개신교 교도들이 보면 사이비이며, 여호와의 증인 교도들은 지옥에 간다고 할 것이다. 웹을 검색했지만 아무도 한국의 정통 기독교 교파가 뭔지 정의를 내리고 있지 못했다.

물론, "예수와 성경 말씀을 바르게 따르는 것이 정통이다"라고 하는 무식한 사람들이 있다. 이 것은 순환 논리이다. 어떻게 따르는 것이 바른 것인가 하는 것에 대한 의견이 나뉘는 것이 교파들인데, 바르게 따르는 게 정통이라고 한다면, 서로 자기가 가장 미녀라고 주장하는 여자 1000명을 모아 놓고 누구 말이 진짜인지를 고르는데, "가장 예쁜 여자가 진짜이다"라고 하는 것과 같다. 가장 예쁜 것이 무엇인지, 아무도 반박할 수 없는 객관적 기준을 달란 말이야, 예를 들면 눈 크기가 5cm 이상이다든가, 키가 170cm 이상이다든가...

어쨌든 현실은 자기가 예수를 믿는자고 하는 사람들도 수많은 교파로 나뉘어 서로 자기 말이 맞으며, 자기 교파의 가르침을 따르지 않으면 예수를 믿어도 잘못 믿은 것이므로 지옥에 간다고 하는 것이다. 여기에 유대교나 이슬람교 등 다른 종교까지 더해 보라. 서로 자기 말을 안 믿으면 지옥간다는 가르침의 종류가 수 천 가지는 될 거다. 그 중 어느 것이 진짜이지?

저 수많은 종교를 정말 진실하게 믿고 있는 사람들 중, 저 종교의 말이 사실이라면, 상당수가 지옥에 가고 만다는 것이 아이러니하지 않나? 저 주장들의 모순이 보이지 않나?

Just bought an iPad 3. Comparing it with my Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Every gadgets have pros and cons. People who say "X is perfect, I love it" are those who are not fully utilizing X. They just use tiny fraction of the features of X and satisfied with it. People who say "X is perfect, Y sucks and those who buy Y are suckers" are suckers themselves. They just do not know why many people buy Y.

Anyways, I generally like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 (GT 10.1). There are somethings I do not like about it, but there are more things I like about it, and I will buy Galaxy Tab 11.6 when it hits the stores with the glorious 2560*1600 resolution screen. Meanwhile, the iPad 3 currently has the highest resolution. So many people around me have bought iPad 3. Finally today I bought one too.

It is hot

Yes, you have guessed it. I mean literally. I just downloaded some apps from the store over Wi-Fi, browsed the Internet, played some YouTube videos. I did NOT play 3D games. During my use, the power cable had been connected to it.

It got definitely hot! Apple fanboys in Korea said it was not that hot and Samsung Galaxy S2 is hotter (somehow, they always mention Samsung), iPad 3 feels probably hotter because the back panel is metal. GT 10.1 and GS2's back panels are plastic. Can you guess which substance will feel hotter on your hand, metal or plastic? I hold iPad 3 for about one hour or so, and put it down to write this post, but I still feel some residue on my both palms. It sure is a slightly unpleasant experience I did not have with my GT 10.1.

It is heavy

Yeah, some say 60g is nothing, but that DOES make difference. iPad 3 is heavy. Admit it.

My iPad's screen is not equally white

Part of the screen look greenish and part of the screen look pinkish. This is a well-known problem among iPad 3 buyers in Korea. You need a good luck if yours happen to have a fully white screen without problems. The problem is that Apple Korea does NOT refund or change iPad 3 with those problems. They claim that those iPad 3 are normal and the users should deal with it. Though I have no choice but to use my iPad 3, it irritates me when I view a white web page on my iPad.

It takes for ever to charge

When I was using my iPad with full brightness with power cable connected, I expected it would be charged. But actually the battery meter was dropped. Now I am charging it without using it. One strange thing is that even though I am charging it (with screen turned off) it feels cool. When I used iPod Touch 4, it got hot when charging, even if the screen was turned off.

The sound is louder than GT 10.1's but mono. Where the speak should be headed?

I played the same YouTube video. Of course they were on the same 5GHz Wi-Fi. Strangely, GT 10.1 quickly buffered the video and started it. iPad 3 took substantially longer time to buffer it.

The maximum volume of iPad 3 was definitely louder than that of GT 10.1. But GT 10.1 has stereo speakers, and I like that. When I was watching a music video on iPad 3, the sound is skewed at one direction, and felt strange. iPad 4 should have stereo speakers, for it is a multimedia-consuming device! And don't tell me to use earbuds. You know they are bad for your ears.

But the high-resolution screen looks great most of the time!

I cannot deny that, with all other shortcomings the iPad 3 got to achieve that resolution. Pictures look nice, though text on a white background does not, because mine has a greenish-pinkish screen.

Applications quality is better than that of Android tablets.

The number of users of iPad, a single model, far exceeds the number of all hundreds of Android tablets combined. Apps made by large companies look better because they have dedicated graphics designers. Large companies want profit, so they rather make iPad apps than making Android tablet apps, simply because the number of iPad users are larger.

I browsed the top free apps in the App Store, the icons of those apps surely looked a lot better than those in Android markets. I downloaded some apps, and the quality was better, too.

For example, Skype for Android is the same for phones and tablets. On my GT 10.1, Skype looks ugly because the layouts are distorted. On iPad 3, it just had iPad version of Skype! Damn you, Microsoft. Create an Android tablet version, too!

The UI of the iOS is smoother and more elegant.

Why Android UI looks so crappy? The have all the good things but the UI... I just hope the Android team would spend a little bit more time on developing better UI.

Conclusion

I cannot tell which one is the better one. Both GT 10.1 and iPad 3 has pros and cons. If you are rich, buy both. If you are not rich, choose the one that suits better, considering all the pros and cons I have listed so far.
